NEW YORK -- Gov. George Pataki leads Democratic challenger H. Carl McCall by 11 points _ 39 percent to 28 percent _ among likely voters, according to a statewide poll.

Independence Party candidate B. Thomas Golisano has 16 percent of the vote, with 15 percent undecided, according to The New York Times poll published on the newspaper's Web site Thursday.

When undecided voters who lean toward one candidate or another are included, Pataki leads McCall, 42 percent to 31 percent, with Golisano at 17 percent and 8 percent undecided.

Conservative voters should understand that Golisano has been spending large sums of money buying liberal votes. He is not necessarily more conservative than Pataki. A vote for Golisano is a vote for McCall.

Where does Golisano stand on the 2nd Amendment?

No difference between Golisano and Pataki? You can't be serious.

The primary difference is not on the issues - it is that Pataki is the ELECTED Governor of the State of New York! Golisano is not.
Pataki is a Northeast Republican, but a conservative Republican is NOT going to be elected in NY.
Pataki patched up his differences with Guiliani for the good of the country, the state and the party.
Pataki can help Republicans and GWB in 2004 - Golisano cannot.

Looks like more people in New York have more sense than the people out here in Kalifornia. If Red Davis get re-elected I'am out of here when I retire in a couple of years. I'am not going to stick around and pay for the horrendous taxes to pay off the huge debt. Nevada??? Parley

When the Conservative Party elected Jim Buckley in 1970 and nominated Al D'Amato to run against Jacob Javits in the Republican primary in 1980 weren't arguments similar to those you're offering used against them in their campaigns?

Does it make sense for President Bush to try to seriously appeal to New York voters with an eye towards winning their electoral votes? If he accepts the NY position on the 2nd Amendment, for example, he'll probably still lose NY but will certainly lose a whole lot of other states.

Here in Florida, JEB Bush has spent four years appealing to the Southeastern corner of the state. Since Reno was unelectable in Florida, that strategy wouldn't have hurt him if she'd won the Democratic nomination. She didn't and now JEB is finding out that his progress in Southeast Florida was both illusory and came at a cost among those he thought he could take for granted.

Is this in reply to my post? Who said anything about GWB trying to appeal to NY voters? My post was about Pataki! What I SAID was a REPUBLICAN Governor would help GWB in 2004. Pataki is an effective and popular speaker. He's a good campaigner. He will be out on the stump in that election year. If Pataki doesn't win, NY will have a DEMOCRAT Governor.

Who said GWB was going to accept the NY position on the 2nd Amendment? I am a lifetime member of the N.R.A. Good grief. GWB is from TEXAS! He couldn't step foot back in that state if he turned anti-gun. Gore lost TN because of the gun-owners. GWB is no Al Gore (thank God!).

Jeb Bush suffers from two problem: he's George Bush's brother and the Dems want revenge for 2000. This has nothing to do with Jeb or his policies. It has everything to do with Clinton and McAuliffe and their willingness to win at any cost.

Pataki got elected running as a conservative in 1994.

And he is now liberal on every issue.
What do you get form him that is postive?
The only thing you get is the liberal agenda
he pushes get no Republican opposition
since it is being pushed by Republican governor.

Let me guess. You belong to the Bob Smith support group - 'I can't get what I want so I'll let the other side win to send a message. Spare me.

That's what got us in this mess in the first place...Republicans sending a 'message' to GHWB by voting for Ross Perot. Look how much good that did - 8 years of Clinton/Clinton & Gore.

I've voted for plenty of Republicans who differ in philosophy, but in every case they were far preferable to the alternative. In this case - it's Pataki or McCall. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

Exactly right...I'm still doing penance for being foolish enough to vote for Perot so GHW Bush wouldn't get a landslide...how stupid I was!

Never again...my motto now is ANY Republican is better than a DemonRAT in power!

At the risk of paraphrasing Martha: that's a GOOD thing!

Maybe we should send you to New Hampshire to work on the 'Smithies'. LOL.

Good to hear that! Smith lost; his supporters need to get over it and focus on getting Sununu elected. He will support GWB's Judicial nominees.

Pataki can't help GWB in '04 anywhere but in NY. The argument, sometimes seen on FR, that GWB can carry NY is ridiculous. The only way he can do so is at a net electoral loss.

I used the 2nd Amendment merely as an egregious example to make my point. I think even GWB understands that, were he to stop giving lip service to the 2nd Amendment community, he'd be history in '04.

JEB's problems go way beyond the Democrats' desire to win the Governorship at any cost. JEB created most of them.
