The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Delivering a Touch of Home
.
.
A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
in both times of war and peace, thank you.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I can just see one of the helos hovering overhead and directing you to heave to for boarding. Not a pretty sight! I wonder how you would look in stripes. LOL!I don't mind a Coastie slapping cuffs on me just as long as they don't think I'm a Greenpeacer! LOL

Good one, Hostel, good one. LOL! Spoken like a true Navy man.

Ouch, Mr_M! Were you not driving carefully?

My dream is to meet one of these gentlemen before they all leave us. I occasionally make trips to the southwest and I'm really going to make an effort to get it done. It's been said that the Marines wouldn't have taken Iwo Jima if not for the Code Talkers, and I want to express my gratitude to at least one of them while it's still possible.
I'm glad you loved the movie as much as I did.

Thanks kathy.
hey while I'm here, I wanted to ask the forums help on a project that I am working on.
I dabble in web design and such. I have been working on a web site that revolves around the military. mostly this will be about the Navy, submarines in particular. But as I continue work on the site over time, I plan on including the other branches of the service as well.
What I would like from you, is if you are an active, or a retired member of the armed services, and you have a sea, war, air, story to tell, I would like you to send it to me at
pingsteal@hotmail.com. These stories can be full of humor, or they could recount combat experiances, or whatever you feel like writing. The only thing I ask is that you adhere to any classification status there might be on stuff. or if you don't want to identify the "innocent" change the name of the person, you know the drill.
Anyway, any and all submissions would be helpful. Once I get the site up, I will get the link to it here on the canteen.
Thanks again...

Thanks for my morning hot chocolate, and breakfast too.
To: SAMWolf
Bite your tongue, Sam! If we have to take that quiz, so do you. I don't hold out much hope for passing said quiz. LOL!

A moral question for you.
This is an imaginary situation, but it's
interesting to decide what one would do.
The situation:
You are in the Middle East, and there is a
huge flood in progress. Many homes have been
lost, water supplies compromised and structures
destroyed. You are a photographer getting
still photos for the CNN news service and are
travelling alone, looking for particularly
poignant scenes.
You come across Osama Bin Laden who has been
swept away by the floodwaters. He is barely
hanging on to a tree limb and is about to go
under. You can either put down your camera and
save him, or take a Pulitzer Prize winning
photograph of him as he loses his grip on the
limb.
So, here's the question ..... and think
carefully before you answer the question below:
Which lens would you use ?

When freedom and loyalty to one's country was on the line, the Navajo Code Talkers stepped up. They had to deal with just as much prejudice as the next guy, but they did it anyway. They had an ability that many Americans did not have. If it wasn't for their love of their land, people, and heritage, who knows where WWII could have gone. We could all be speaking German.
The valuable lesson about the Navajo Code Talkers was their record. NEVER BROKEN. How awesome was that? It was natural to them and we were blessed to have such a diverse group of people in this country. Our grandparents saved the world and too bad we haven't learned much from it.
To: Johnny Gage
Wow, Johnny, you are ready for anything now. We have AWACS flying out of Elmendorf.
To: tomkow6
LMAO! Sorry, I know it wasn't posted to me. I just thought it was hilarious!
To: Kathy in Alaska
Where did you get that patch?? I have copies of the official, original drawings of the boat ;)
