Delivering a Touch of Home

A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
in both times of war and peace, thank you.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
TO (duchess's) DAD PS:
Thanks for your service TOO!
To: SAMWolf
They sure were, Sam. I look at that picture, and I can't help but think about how that smiling sailor would soon find himself wading out of a landing craft in one of the first waves of the assault on Iwo Jima.
I think about him trying to save the lives of wounded marines, and getting badly wounded himself, with no one left on his medical team to help him.
I think about what it must have been like, watching his stretcher partner die.
He looks all rumpled and happy there - but I know what came later. I have so much love, admiration and respect for him - like I know you do for your dad, too. So many real men in that generation.
(Thank you, Dad, for being a real man. Happy Birthday.)
To: MoJo2001
I will see what I can find! I hope you like my taste. : )
To: LindaSOG
Thank you, Linda. It's funny, I was just thinking about how it was his birthday when I came across the birthday posts (there are so many posts here, I don't usually notice stuff like that) - just thought I'd mention it. So nice of you guys to acknowledge it.
To: Johnny Gage
Thanks for the birthday wishes for my dad, Johnny. Very nice of you!
Duchess
To: LindaSOG
Linda,
No offense intended, but please pull my name from your haloween pings. My personal faith tells me not to celebrate other than as "All Saints Eve." That does not include any creepiness. Again, no offense intended.
To: SAMWolf
Um, do you think that hat's going to do it? LOL!
To: MoJo2001
To: Kathy in Alaska
Oh! THank you!! I think I have some Shamu wav files somewhere. LOL!! Love it! Love it! Love it!!
To: DaughterOfAnIwoJimaVet
Happy Day of His Birth to your Dad, Duchess!
To: DaughterOfAnIwoJimaVet
Happy Birthday, Duchess' Dad!! Woohoo!!
Um, why not buy something for your dad. I'm sure the Bad Boyz won't mind it!! LOL!
To: MoJo2001; Kathy in Alaska
Thanks you guys. I think I WILL buy him something nice today - great idea, MoJo! (Still looking for a hat for you!)

Who's got a credit card? (Amex, preferably - no limit.) a) You will have to see Sam or HiJinx for a credit card.
What makes you think I would "hot dog" with a Coast Guard Cutter? LOL [Duchess looks around innocently.]
b) Hmmmmmmmmmmm....thinking here. Does past experience ring a bell? LOL! Please keep in mind that Tonkin is doing his duty today as the Radio Watchstander at the Coast Guard base and will hear all radio transmissions and will not be pleased if he has to send another cutter after us you. I can just see one of the helos hovering overhead and directing you to heave to for boarding. Not a pretty sight! I wonder how you would look in stripes. LOL!
To: kneezles
kneezles, have you been working the night shift too long? ROTFLMAO!! That is hilarious. Off to email it around.
To: MoJo2001
And NO, it is not acceptable to throw anyone overboard. Wait! Let me amend that. There are a few who may be thrown overboard. We will not name names. Please see the Captain.
To: 68-69TonkinGulfYatchClub
I love the tanks. WTG! And emailing is so easy.
To: Bahbah
Nice to see you Bahbah. Thanks for supporting our troops. The tanks do a nice job of getting the message across. LOL!

Look what the mailman just brought me! (I know some people didn't like this movie for various reasons, but I have done a little study on the Code Talkers and I was surprised at the number of things they got right in this flick.) Has there ever been a Canteen thread on our Navajo heroes?
To: DaughterOfAnIwoJimaVet
I love this movie! I have it! It's absolutely wonderful! I realize that some people can get offended by almost anything, but this was such an encouraging and beautiful tribute to the Navajo..I didn't understand the complaints. Then I woke up and realized that the more color to your pigmentation like MoJo..the more apt you will think like an idiot and feed into the Liberal stupidity of victimization.
