I can't get this put back together right, but I think you get the idea.

X10 did themselves no favors ... I might consider the thing, but I didn't care to have it pop-up, under, next to, over, in, out, beside, around, near every freakin' website I went to ...

I LOVE it!. Why can't I get pop-ups like this? Laughing my sides out over the pic of the Pervert with the lecherous look on his mug.

The actual ad was much better. Made it clear that slick had much he'd rather conceal.

I read an analysis of why X-10 did it. They were a small company with a limited clientele. Even if the PO'ed ration was one thousand seriously ticked persons (and untold millions annoyed) to one sales they are now a name brand. If you even say pop up ads, X-10 is associated with it.

We had a used car salesman in Washington that had those stupid late night commercials. They were live. He was so frustrated one day, he said on camera that if some gave him a sledge hammer, he'd pound on the vehicle. A crew person gave him a sledge hammer, and he did. (Personally I think it was staged but what do I know?) From that moment on, he was a legend. People would actually pay more for a car he had knocked with the sledge. It was a fad, and he did not use it to his advantage. I think he went bankrupt a few years later when the novelty wore off.

X-10 has actually made pop up ads so annoying, that browsers are now putting features in to allow suppressing them. Technology marches on...

Actually the X-10 website has an area that allows you to stop the pop-ups'. (don't know if it's a cookie or what) I think they really just want you to stop by. (and buy!) They do have some cool stuff. FYI

oh I'm sure it was effective ... it seemed like it would have been expensive though ...

I'm torn! I hate the pop ups but when a small businessman I've used for years got burgled in the the middle of the night...who did I think of? It's scary.

Yeah, I gave him X-10 info.

The marketing is effective. Pervasive. Sleazy. Annoying. Memmorable.

Effective!

If MAD Magazine hadn't trademarked the Fold-In concept, I'd draw one up with something to the effect of "What company keeps the net going?" with various logos of IBM, Cisco, Intel, Microsoft, etc. Fold the page, though, and the answer would be: X10! Seriously, it seems like they are practically the sole sponsor of a number of web sites. If X10 went broke, half the net would go with it.

That being said, I've not looked at their web site lately but I've long been wishing they'd improve their dimmers to allow direct setting. Anyone have any idea if they've ever done such a thing (or added dimming to their Socket Rocket)?

No matter. If I get my hands on those X-10 pests, I'll strangle them, chop them up, and feed them to my cat.

I was running Ad Subtract for awhile until my demo expired. Then when I got rid of it I couldn't surf the web. It seems that it had set up my system to use a proxy server. When I got rid of that I could again surf the web.

Meanwhile I uninstalled IEXPLORER, Reinstalled it, Repaired it, etc. and when I was done I had my javascripts turned off.

I get no popups now.

I can't participate in some internet polls (no big loss, with online voter fraud it does little to participate in such polls), I can't buy from some online retailers (I can always take my business elsewhere but have still found ways to get to some of the transactions), and only a handful of pages won't load.

My realplayer is out of date and I don't want the new one of those either. Occasionally I find the "news" website that wants to launch a video report of a newsbroadcast to RP using a javascript. Screw em.

your average popupstopper like the one recommended earlier in the thread lets you be selective (just hold down ctrl when you want the popup to open). Ad-Aware from lavasoftusa.com comes in a free version and purges your system of all installed spyware, adware, and malicious cookies. I paid for the full version (15$) that blocks them dynamically (although now that I use Mozilla instead of IE i can configure it to automatically block 95% of ads).

I too hate the pop-ups and especially the X-10 ads. I always feel like the kid who looks when someone says, 'your shoelace is untied', then says, 'Made you look!'.

I do like the idea that "Clinton is a total Sleazeball" is ingraining itself into the popular culture.

I've been using Ad-aware which is great for removing spyware but I didn't find it doing anything to stop popups.

While no longer as prevalent as they used to be, the trigger for a lot of popup ads is often installed in spyware and bad cookies. Hence the mystery popups when you are on a site that has none linked to it that you can recall...
