Why Am I getting DOD certificates on FR?
Free Republic ^ | 10-14-02 | me

I went to the FR link above and got a certificate notice.

It read as follows

Information you exchange with this site cannot be viewed or changed by others. However, there is a problem with the site's security certificate.

The certificate was issued by a company you have not chosen to trust. View the certificate to determine whether you want to trust the certifying authority.

The name on the certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site.

This Certificat cannot be verified due to a lack of information:

Issued to: www.perscomonline.army.mil

Issued by: DOD CLASS 3 CA-4

Valid from 4/26/02 to 4/26/05

Issuer: US Government

Does anyone know why? Non-tinfoil comments from tech types would be appreciated.

It's the image in post #134. It's linked from a military site.

I'm getting the same message. It certainly is odd and a first for me.

it's an issue with IE's security settings that you have set up within your browser.

Thanks for clearing that up guys, I never ran into that before. I was just on my way to the closet to dust of my tinfoil action-suit.

This IE 6 is pretty cool, it knows I don't trust the government.

I received an additional security warning that said that the certificate may be an intercept from someone other than the site at which you were trying to access.

The source of the certificate was "www-perscom.army.mil" and the site trying to be accessed was "www.perscomonline.mil". The chances are there was no problem though.

Does anyone know why? Non-tinfoil comments from tech types would be appreciated.

As someone else has noted (although he got the post number wrong), an image from www-perscom.army.mil is linked in the thread.

The site requires that you use https: (secure), rather than http: (non-secure). But, the SSL certificate they used appears to be self-generated. Since the certificate wasn't generated/signed by a certificate authority that your browser recognizes (such as Verisign), your browser is generating a warning.

It's because of an image that someone posted. Rather tha nuploading to their own site, which they should have done. If for no other reason than courtesy. But it is an image that is bringing up the certificate.
