My First Firearm Lesson
self | Oceanperch

Posted on 10/10/2002 10:04:49 PM PDT by oceanperch

I have been blindly trying to read threads that have to do with firearms, ammo ect.

I have never held a gun in my life.

Well I took a care basket of farm fresh Goodies to another home bound family (this is my respite time) and in return recieved my first lesson on firearms and an invite to the range.

The fellow is a retired Deputy and firearms instructor. A good all round solid guy and supportive teacher of using the tool a "gun".

He started me out with a 22 with long ammo no gun powder and a hubcap.

It gave me a whole new view on this "tool' I had never seen or handled.

He took me down to the vault and showed me the various open chamber load and close and I would say the rules and safety of using a firearm.

I was able to see how different guns worked in plain language. Safety was the key to this guys lesson. Basically common sense after going through guidelines.

I was able to feel the weight ofhis guns and position rifles to get a feel for comfort.

I learned what and how different each "tool" worked and the selective way each gun can be operated.

I cannot remember the last one he bought out he called the "big boy" it was loud has a big kick and is used in law enforement. By then I was feeling in awe of this new thing I was learning and I remember thinking the "big boy" had so many more components to it I was thinking now this is fire power.

So now the mystery of guns is no more and I am going to step two the range.

He reminded me as I was leaving out of the door that we are short on good range weather here on the Oregon Coast so call soon.

I think I will be at the range in two weeks my next respite time.

Thank you to all of you who have been running threads the last four years you peaked my curiousity and I ventured out.

Now I can with lesson one have some understanding of what you all are talking about!

We even went over the state and Fed guidelines on the laws.

This man had a great teaching ability and looking forward to my next lesson.

All together it was a great thing to do. Glad I took the step and handled my first few "tools" firearms. OP

Why do you need respite?

Caution: this can be an addictive an expensive hobby.

But it's worth it, IMHO, because it's fun, because you can use guns to defend your life and property, and because firearms represent the backbone of our Freedom.

Are you going to get a carry permit? (I think Oregon is one of the 33 states that partially recognizes your Right to carry, but only after paying a fee)

Why do I think these type posts are designed to smoke out gun owners and ID them? Paronoia, I guess. But, still, otherwise, what's the point????!!

They already have the Form 4473s and associated "background checks" to do that.

You've inspired me so much that I'm going to Front Sight Weapons Training Institute this weekend for a defensive handgun course.

Okay, I was already going but congrats anyway.

That's assuming your firearms weren't purchased pre-gun control, or were purchased through the government approved process. Oops, there you go, the poster got me!!!!

True. But on the other hand, the "domestic enemies of the Constitution" have no idea just how many guns and gun owners don't show up on their registration lists.

Congratulations! And welcome to the world of arms!

A firearm is a powerful tool. That's why criminals and tyrants make use of them. And that's why we need them in the hands of honorable citizens, who will use them for their good and the good of our nation.

"He started me out with a 22 with long ammo no gun powder and a hubcap. "

What, you were being shown how to defend your self with a hubcap...?

"It gave me a whole new view on this "tool' I had never seen or handled. "

Yeah, fur shure, the use of the word "tool" is very accurate, maybe not in the .22 vein...

" I was able to feel the weight ofhis guns and position rifles to get a feel for comfort "

Uh Huh! Sure... What is wrong with the water in Oregon? The rest of the country now knows what is wrong with the mentality of the voters there. Let's continue...

"Now I can with lesson one have some understanding of what you all are talking about! "

After voting in Florida, did you actually drive back to Oregon, or were you flown by a "friend" who is active in the current Democrat election process?

You weren't, by any chance approached by a guy named "Raoul" were you? If so, were you given any of the firearms you now so proudly know how to shoot (you might count your toes)?

OceanPerch from Oregon, you sound like a great penpal! Please Freepmail me ASAP when ya get over that hangover.! We may have so much to talk about...

This time next year, you should be teaching a couple of first-timers yourself. And teach them that they're responsible for teaching others as soon as they're able to.

Well, let's not forget the subscription lists to all the gun mags, the membership and Instructor lists of the NRA/GOA/SAF & CCRKBA. Then there are the lists of all state CCW permit holders and cross reference with all the DD214's on combat arms soldiers along with the lists of weapons qualifications held. Then there are those pesky activists who write lots of letters to the editor (like me). I think any good super computer could cross reference all of these and come up with a pretty good list of folks to put on the "FIRST SWEEP" list for any round of confiscations....and I'll bet I'm right near the top of that list.

You can informally continue your education at any of several very good firearms forums on the web. One of the best all-around ones is TheFiringLine.com.

Caution: this can be an addictive an expensive hobby.

Can some of the expense be reduced by learning how to re-load spent cartridges? If so, is it easy to learn and how much $$$ can realistically be saved?

I'm not into reloading (at least not yet).

My limited understanding is that it's main cost advantage is only realized if you shoot a lot of rifle rounds (other than .223 or .308 since those are cheap).

Some folks also like to load their own to increase accuracy of their rounds, or to tweak a bullet's velocity for sport.

Finally, there are advantages to being self-sufficient.
