TEHRAN, Oct 8 (AFP) - Iranian police have raided two illegal parties near Tehran, with the 88 young people arrested punished by jail terms, fines and flogging, the Abrar newspaper said Tuesday.
The report said 56 people were detained at a party in Shahrak-e-Qods, a residential area west of Tehran, while a further 32 were arrested in nearby Ekbatan.
It said those detained -- all aged between 18 and 21 years-old -- were celebrating their entrance into university and were caught while dancing. The report said police also seized a quantity of alcohol.
The 88 were sentenced on Monday to unspecified prison terms, flogging and fines ranging from between 5,000,000 and 10,000,000 rials (650 and 1250 dollars), Abrar said.
Iranian authorities regularly crack down on private parties where Iran's strict Islamic laws are flouted by mixed-sex dancing and the consumption of alcohol and drugs.
Ommited from the article, no doubt, was decadent western music. In other words, the young Iranians want "Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll."
And from that common ground, we can be optimistic.
Ugh. Reminds me of the girlfriend who attended Pepperdine U in Malibu. As I recall they didn't allow dancing either. (Many years ago, if it matters.) But fines, flogging and prison... for dancing? Talk about repressive!!!
Iranians: kill your silly rulers when they dare to treat you like caged dogs. Flogging for dancing?
Wake up, world. Some regimes are not benign and must be dragged into the 21st century for the sake of all. Beam in the rock music, ship in the beer and let the revolutions begin!
Any chance we can trade these students for some of the resident FR pro-WOD Taliban?
