SACRAMENTO -- Republican Bill Simon's claim to have evidence of illegal fund raising by Gov. Davis unraveled Tuesday after photographs his supporters produced failed to provide the proof he promised.

At a press conference coordinated with Simon's campaign, the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs released two almost identical photos taken Jan. 31, 1998.

This is just a classic screw-up on Simon and his people's part. If Davis had accepted a campaign contribution in his office, there's no way he's stupid enough have the thing photographed. That should have been Simon's first clue. Secondly, the organization is a turncoat organization, endorsing whoever comes up with the most bucks. That should have been the second clue.

Then, by neglecting to confirm the information and location of the photo, Simon and his campaign made themselves look idiotic.

This is close to the dumbest campaign I've ever followed.

It doesn't take a Davis shill to figure out that Simon is the only person in Kalifornia that Davis can beat. And will beat.

Well I don't know anything about Mineral Man, but I will tell you this, this was incredibly stupid move by Simon. No other way around it.. I don't care how corrupt everyone knows someone is, when you are ready to lobby specific charges, you better have your ducks in a damned row.... It looks like Simon's camp didn't even bother finding the ducks, much less put them in a row.

Everyone signed up sometime. Pointing out that Simon's people were stupid not to have checked this stuff out before going public with it does not make me a shill for anyone.

Even further, Simon's current television campaign is lame, at best. No issues. No substance. He just says what a nice guy he is and what a nice family he has.

This campaign looks almost deliberately designed to create a loser in the election. What should have been a no-brainer has turned in to a no-brains campaign.
