Simon unable to back contribution claim against Davis

LOS ANGELES (AP) - GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon made an explosive - and unsubstantiated - accusation Monday that he had evidence Gov. Gray Davis had broken the law by accepting a campaign contribution at a state Capitol office.
But Simon's campaign quickly acknowledged they had no evidence - just the word of a law enforcement organization that has endorsed Simon and sparred with Davis.
And later Monday, two people who said they were present at the time said the 1998 contribution in question was in fact made in Davis' Los Angeles campaign office.
Simon made the accusation at a press conference after his debate with Davis, sending reporters scurrying to confirm it. He has repeatedly criticized Davis for his record-breaking campaign fund-raising.
Davis campaign adviser Garry South called the accusation "a desperate move" and said the governor had operated within the law.
After Simon said his campaign would produce evidence of Davis' alleged illegal act, campaign aides told reporters they had learned of a letter being submitted to the state's campaign finance watchdog agency, but did not actually have it.
Indeed, Thomas Hiltachk, a lawyer representing the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs, delivered a letter to the Fair Political Practices Commission, stating that the group had given $10,000 to Davis in his office when he was lieutenant governor and a gubernatorial candidate.
"On or about Jan. 31, 1998, the former executive director of COPS, Al Angele personally delivered a camp contribution" to Davis' Capitol office, the letter states.
Angele, who has since retired from the group, disputed the claim Monday, telling reporters that he met with Davis in the governor's Southern California campaign headquarters.
"I've never been in his office in my life," Angele said, saying he had not been informed about COPS' plan to make such an allegation. "I don't understand it. It's out of left field, totally unbelievable."
Plus, South and Frank Grimes, who was then the law enforcement liaison for Davis, also said they recalled the 1998 meeting taking place in Davis' Los Angeles campaign office.
Davis aides in July accused the COPS group of endorsing Simon after Davis appointed one of his aides to replace a COPS executive on a law enforcement advisory commission.
COPS scheduled an 11 a.m. news conference Tuesday in Los Angeles at which Hiltachk said it will offer proof of its claims and respond to comments made by South.
"We stand behind the allegations" despite Angele's denial, Hiltachk said. "We wouldn't have made them if we didn't think it was true."
Of Angele's recollection, Hiltachk said, "I don't believe that's true. I believe he's mistaken."
However, Hiltachk would offer no proof Monday that the exchange took place in the Capitol, saying, "Come to the press conference tomorrow."

What part of "Come to the press conference tomorrow" don't they understand?
If the goods aren't there, they can say so tomorrow afternoon. Why the rush to allege "there is no there there" before the press conference? Why doesn't Bluth acknowledge as readily as the COPS group contention with Davis the fact that South and his buddy have no motivation to be truthful about the allegation?

As if it matters to the Sacramento Bee.
Bill Simon could produce video of Gray Davis having sex with a 5 year old boy while smoking crack and robbing a convenience store and the SacBee would STILL report that the Simon campaign is resorting to desperate tactics.

We wouldn't have made them if we didn't think it was true." This is another example of campaiging on an issue that will not take one vote away from Davis. It will not cause one undecided voter to vote for Simon. It will turn some voters away from Simon.
How many times did Gore and Clinton collect money in the White House with no controlling legal authority. How many times has this kind of issue been floated with no impact before Simon figures out this story won't work.
Davis would have had to take the money for personal luxury to make it work with voters. A couple of Rolex watches and a time piece to be named later can do a candidate in as the Torch can attest. But collecting campaign money from anyone, anytime, anywhere is a worthless issue with the center and Democrats.
Simon has to be stuborn with an I.Q. of about 80 to do all the stupid things he has done. When you are in a hole the firt rule is to stop digging. Simon keeps trying to get a bigger steam shovel.
Only Bill Simon has what it takes to re-elect Gray Davis.

Embarrassing. If you are going to say something like that, you should know the facts beforehand.

It was often said that the only thing that would bring WJC down would be finding him in bed with a dead girl or a live boy. GD may be better insulated?

"Go Simon" is right.
Go back to your board room and hang out with Michael Huffington.
Those two are peas in a pod.
I want to make it clear that I don't think Simon is gay, however (not that there's anything wrong with that!) ;)
To: NormsRevenge
Only adds up to 98... hmm.
To: NormsRevenge
I got lucky and just finished watching the debate on Cspan 11. I think Davis stumbled many times...no wonder he does't want to debate. The panel seemed a little hostile.

It would be great to nail Davis!

When was this poll taken - I would assume before the debates?
The Davis lead has narrowed by a point from the previous SurveyUSA poll. If I were him, I'd be most worried by Camejo's doubling between this poll and the last we've seen. If any more of his supporters drift in that direction, he's in big, big trouble.
If my memory serves, we have some interesting movements here:
Davis has picked up about 3% from the undecideds, since if my memory serves his old number was 41%.
Simon has picked up about 6% from his previous 31%. Looks like the new ads are having some effect, as well as the continuing recovery from the fraud charge's impact.
The real story, though, is Camejo, whose vote has doubled! That's fantastic news for us, and I don't think he's done yet. If he can pick off a couple more points from Davis, this race could very quickly become a statistical dead heat.
So it's time for some statistical game playing. We've had 3+6+4 change from previous undecideds. We have 6% left. If that 6% was divided in the same way the undecideds are going, Davis would have 45.8% and Simon 39.76.
So if present trends continue, we're 6% behind. My personal opinion is that differential turnout should give us at least a 5% advantage, because outside of organized labor, Davis' base does not like the man. So at this point, we are very, very close.
We are definitely living in interesting times!

I think the missing points were for the Return of the Hale-Bopp candidate and The Creature from the Black Lagoon ;-)

Yes, this was pre-debate poll.
Copeland is in there even tho' I think he got 86'ed by his party.
I see it as a dead heat. Who can mobilize their base?

Re#5 You are right on the message front. Simon is trying though the presstitutes are doing their best to drown out any such message. It is still trickling out, under the radar, via talk radio, the internet and targeted campaigning. As to yet another 'allegation' of campaign offenses/bribery, at a minimum it keeps the corruption factor out front--the main reason that Grayout is in trouble (along with the energy crisis). We're looking at record low turnouts as well, which is good for Simon, provided he has a GOTV effort. Lastly, many thinking Rats hate Davis. I know one who (was forced) to give a PAC $2,000 for Davis, but is still not going to vote for him. Simon is going to surprise once again....

Good question.
It was obvious from Saturday's event that the unions are mobilized. I was amazed at the numbers. On the other hand, note that we were able to yell "Dump Davis Now!" at them for quite a while with little response from them. Yes, that short fat girl (who you'll see in my video) waved the Davis sign like crazy, but she was a minority of one. In the end, we were all but unanswered by the bovine mob of Democrats. This would seem to indicate that even their passion for Davis is limited.
I find the shift to Camejo very promising. The LA Weekly will endorse Davis thanks to his last minute spate of liberal-friendly bills, but its tone will be grumpy at best. I think he's done just enough for the Weekly not to endorse the green. That being said, I think a lot of the Weekly's people will vote for Camejo; we could see this happening in this poll. If Camejo hits 10%, and the change comes from Davis voters, Davis is in real trouble. With the trends as they are, I strongly suspect this will happen.
I think the debates showed that Simon was capable and intelligent. That will make people want to cut his way. He's had a nice surge - from 31% to 37% - in the last couple of weeks. All he needs to do is convince 2% more to vote and 5% to stay home and he's in ...
