(New Haven-WTNH, Oct. 4, 2002 Updated 6:15 PM) _ Military recruiters came under attack by dozens of Yalies Friday. A group of students and professors says the military's 'don't ask, don't tell' policy clashes with the university's anti-discrimination policy.
It's a quiet protest that several Yale Law School students and professors hope will speak volumes. They're defending the universities non-discrimination policy.
"When we see Department of Defense kind of strong arming us, trying to push us away from that principal, people stand up and say no were not going to allow that to happen," Yale student Matt Alsdorf said.
Since 1978, the university has had a policy requiring businesses who want to recruit on campus to sign a form that says they will not discriminate against people for their sexual orientation.
Students wore gags mocking the military's 'don't ask, don't tell' policy about gays directly conflicts with that, so they wanted to keep the military out of their recruiting program.
"This is not about patriotism," Yale student Daphna Renan, said. "We support our army. We support the people who serve. What this is about is wanting each of the brightest and most capable people who are my peers are capable of serving the nation regardless of their sexual orientation."
The Defense Department accused the university of violating the Solomon Amendment. That federal law states schools that refuse to allow military recruiters on campus can lose federal funding. Yale gets more $300 million each year from the government.
"I think it's unconscionable to be playing with $350 million in funding for scientific research and for life saving medical research in order to promote discrimination and push discrimination through the doors of the law school," Alsdorf said.
"Losing $350 million is just not a choice for this university," Yale professor Kenji Yoshino said. "I mean, an entire department from the university would be shut down if that funding were withdrawn."
So the university agreed to temporarily suspend the non-discrimination policy for the good of the university.
Law school officials say they will ask the military or a court to decide if the university and the military and their different policies can co-exist.

Yale student: we don't like to be reminded that getting a Yale education has nothing to do with the real world...

Gays in the miltary may be a good idea. They would be able to lick the enemy in a fight and if we drop 'em behind enemy lines they could attack from the rear.

Thankfully we don't have to depend on these Yale PC pinheads for our nation defense.

And when we need them for deployment, their sh*t will already be packed.

The recruiters should show the Yalies some "pressure points"...

How can these people use big words like "unconscionable" and yet be so ignorant?

I really don't think it would matter if we allowed homosexuals to serve openly in the military. After the first few days at basic training, I think any "flamers" that joined would quickly adopt a "don't ask, don't tell" policy on their own.

Wonder what the Yalies problem are, they don't have to worry about the draft any longer, and serving with the un washed.
Hey since I am a memeber of a terrorist organization GOA, I can be crude.

Leave it up to some pompous irrelevant college that requires all students to take "Left Wingery 101" their first year to stick up for their "fairy boys" wanting to join "The Navy".

Anybody doubt that they'd find some OTHER excuse to oppose military recruiting on campus if this issue didn't exist?
This has, IMHO, nothing whatsoever to do with so-called "gay rights" and everything to do with a reflexive, psuedo-marxist hatred of the U.S. military and all it represents. Not to mention all it shows these parasites of what they are NOT.
Notice, said parasites disregarded immediately the idea of refusing the federal cash stipend (was it REALLY $350,000,000, for the love of God?). That free taxpayer dough overrides principle, it would seem.
Worthless flesh-wastes. It must be tough, however, to be a cowardly parasite when men and women of true HONOR and DIGNITY are around, and point up by their very existence one's own lack of any such positive traits.

Hey Matt, join the military and serve. Sh!#, Shower, and shave with a bunch of guys without privacy - no stalls - no shower doors then come back and talk to us. Furthermore, it's 'unconscionable' for you jokers to force me to accept that gayness isn't a choice. To force us to accept it or else.
To: LurkedLongEnough
The military wants gays only during the shooting. Hypocrites.
