A new statewide survey shows that 53 percent of those asked support allowing those with a doctor's recommendation to get up to 2 ounces of marijuana a month free from the state Department of Public Safety. For everyone else, Proposition 203 also would reduce the penalty for possession of small amounts of marijuana to a civil offense, punishable by no more than a $250 fine. [No -- 33%, Don't know -- 15%; http://www.azdailysun.com/non_sec/nav_includes/story.cfm?storyID=49912]

Of course, there shouldn't be any legal "risk" at all.

I'm actually risk averse. I'm just saying that a $25o fine is no deterrent at all. It's a tax.

Actually I think that pot will be decriminalized here soon - the new penalty will be: Dane and Kevin Curry will move in with you and fart in your living room.

Of course, there shouldn't be any legal "risk" at all.In view of the enormous external costs dopers inflict on other tax-paying citizens, the costs should be much greater and the risks of getting caught should be more substantial.
It's all about personal responsibility. It's a libertarian "thing."

Dane and Kevin Curry will move in with you and fart in your living room. They don't have to be in your living room, no matter where you are, you can smell 'em.
The stench of fascism carries far.
To: MrLeRoy
Sounded good until they got to the "free" part.

That's a nightmare in itself. I'm picturing Chris Farley on SNL (Saturaday Night Live) doing a skit where he moves in with a family to help straighten out the kids. Frequently saying, "...and if that happens you'll end up living in a van down by the river." All the while the big fat oaf wrestling to keep his pants up eventually stumbles, sprawling onto the coffee table, smashing to splinters.

For legitimate medical reasons only, according to the poll.
Now we have the effective form of pot in a pill RX and there is no issue here. It has been solved and we only have illegal drug users (addicts) left who want to do their drugs.
What a lack of life some people have that they spend much of their free time worshiping the god of illegal drugs.
Very sad!

Frankly, I think that arrangement ought to be reversed.

There is somehting to be said for decriminalization. It removes any real risk while preserving the cloak and dagger thrill of illicit activity.

the costs should be much greater and the risks of getting caught should be more substantial. $250 is no risk at all. Anyone who is willing to buy weed for $50 per .125 oz is willing to pay this fine. This is effectively the same as legalization. I would treat it as such.
