Here's some good news for parents, teachers and anyone else who cares about the public schools: No matter who wins the Nov. 5 election, the bipartisan consensus for education reform in California should continue.
Gov. Gray Davis and his Republican opponent, businessman Bill Simon, agree on the core tenets behind the recent reforms: consistent standards, statewide testing and an accountability program that puts schools on the spot to improve. Where the two candidates do differ, it is mostly over detail, not principle.

Home schoolers should turn out en masse for Simon, since Davis' public school manager has said repeatedly that home schooling is illegal and should continue to be.
That being said, I do think decentralization combined with tighter standards would help. The LA Weekly, hardly a typical Simon mouthpiece, ran an article that said Simon had might as well have a shot at education for all the good Davis has done.
Considering that the Weekly hates all conservatives, that's quite a Davis dig. Sadly, I know that Davis has done barely enough to earn the Weekly endorsement in November, but I know they're going to pepper it with so many caveats that I don't think the Weekly crowd will show up.
If this election was decided by committed true believers - if it was the Free Republic crowd versus the Weekly crowd, I have no doubt that we'd win, because we're a lot less disgusted with our candidate than the Weekly is.
