"The tech industry represents the very best of what California has to offer," Simon said in a speech to the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group. "It has been at the heart of the an economic boom in our economy over the past decade - an economic boom that generated prosperity everywhere across our country. But the very industry where opportunity once seemed limitless is now suffering.
"In the last year, tens of thousands of tech industry jobs have been eliminated in this valley alone. More than any other part of our economy, the tech sector has felt the brunt of the recent downturn. Our future success will depend on rebuilding this important field, restoring it to greatness once again."
Simon said the return to prosperity in California's tech sector would require a responsible leader who plans for the future.
"Silicon Valley needs a governor who wants to remove burdensome regulations and bureaucracy that are causing businesses and jobs to flee our state," Simon said. "Silicon Valley needs a governor who understands that restoring the vibrancy of this economy means streamlining workers comp, curbing crazy litigation and fostering a business climate friendly both to employers and working families. Silicon Valley needs a governor who will cut the capital gains tax to 5% and permanently extend the state moratorium on Internet e-commerce taxation."
Simon said four years of Gray Davis have done little to improve California or technology-based industries.
"Californians, including those in the Silicon Valley, must ask themselves: Are we better off today than we were four years ago? When I am governor, I will work to turn this state around and usher in a renaissance to the Silicon Valley and every part of California."
