This is truly arrogance on a breathtaking scale from the EU. I certainly hope Ireland votes No again to punch the EU, and Ahern, in the face. This kind of imperial presumption from Brussels should be anathema to the Irish, as it should be to free people anywhere.

Regards, Ivan

By contrast, the No camp is a motley assortment of fringe parties, including the Greens, Sinn Fein, socialists, Marxists and Right-wing eurosceptics.

Hmmm. Sounds like a fringe group of nuts. Guess they forgot to add "and the majority of the Irish voting populace, as evidenced by the failure of the referendum to pass a year ago."

BTW, I was in Europe a year ago when this failed the first time and the venom spewed at Ireland over it was amazing. I recall one EU beurocrat on some british channel almost shaking he was so mad, and he basically said "We don't need Ireland, we'll do it anyway!" I see that already the idea that a loophole will be found if Ireland continues to say "Nay".

If I were Irish and in Ireland I'd be one of the fringe nuts. I understand that the Irish are pretty angry about this, they really hate this being shoved down their throat.

If indeed they do say No, it will be a victory for democracy. And on top of that, it will deliver a blow to Bertie Ahern, who basically has kept his job through bribing the electorate with their own money, then trying to cover up the fact he's left a 900 million Euro hole in the public finances.

I this is voted down again, and yet another referendum is staged later, a provision should be put in that a refusal will be binding for a given length of time, say ten years.

On the plus side, this second referendum is proof positive that a yes vote need not be considered binding either, and can be reversed a a future time, if the forces of sanity gain enough support.

Mr Ahern has virtually promised his EU counterparts that the Irish will say "Yes", unlike last time, when they rejected the deal, thus threatening to unravel plans to enlarge the EU in 2004.

And THIS is the reason I shall vote 'No'...despite being a 'Yes' voter last time out. I will register my protest, I live in a democracy, and I will not allow corrupt politicians in Dublin and Brussels tell me that my countrymen are stupid. Thank you! :-)

Ahern has put his neck so much on the line you have to wonder if he'll try stuffing the ballot boxes. In any event, if he loses, that's the end of him.

Uh oh, now Ahern is indeed in trouble, it's the Celtic Gleam of Defiance. ;)

They still do it? The last thing I would accuse most Irish of being is stupid. My Irish family are mostly engineers.

We'll be cheering on the old country over here. Don't give in.

Umm..well, I wouldn't say that too loudly. Haven't you seen the Dilbert cartoons? ;-) (Kidding) As for Politicians believing the masses are stupid...don't they all? Well, they do until the masses rear up and give them the kick in the backside that they so richly deserve. I'm polishing my boots as we speak! :-)

Never vote yes on anything involving the EU. They are evil commies. I think the EU could possibly make the Irish nostalgic for Cromwell.
