In a 90-minute face-off marked by verbal cuts and sarcasm, Democrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and Republican Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. sharply attacked each other's records and political promises last night as they debated for the first time in Maryland's gubernatorial campaign.
Neither candidate broke new ground in the ragged debate, repeating themes they've emphasized through the campaign.
Townsend argued that Ehrlich's congressional record shows he has turned his back on schoolchildren, minorities and the poor. Ehrlich said Townsend lacks the experience to lead the state and almost four decades of Democratic rule has led to arrogance and budget shortfalls.

WBAL introduced their discussion of the debate this morning with a clip of the moderator introducing Ehrlich followed by a chorus of boos. It was quite a show last night. The Ehrlich camp predicted it was going to be a broadway show, not a debate. It turned out to be a circus.

In political terms............Maryland is a sewer.

Some of the more urban areas are truly sewers- in every sense of the word.

Good mornin'! Baltimore sun is shining!
BTW, this bump list was compiled from last night's live debate thread and will expire in about 15 minutes. No worries.

So, what is the press saying up there? How far off were we in our opinions of her versus the press' opinions of how she did?

The news story is the audience behavior- unfortunately the ignernt boobs stole the show. On WBAL, they're polling the audience and a few experts. They experts say neither delivery was great, no one really won. The debate just served to solidify everyone's position. The callers are impressed with her delivery- surprised that she had it in her. A very interesting Queasy Mfume clip had him saying that pols are free to use the NAACP's report card but would caution agaist putting too much emphasis on it. That's all as of 08:19.

The local news last night was praising KKT, But I expected that

er, against.

I was looking for accounts of this first of only two, I think, debates between them in the washigton post this morning. All I could see was a headline that said something to the effect: "KKT outlines her plan to ease MD's deficit without raising taxes".
Unreal!
No account that I saw of the debate itself, just what KKT's fiscal plans were, and then, a bit about what Erlich's approach is.

Yeeecch, can't stand local news.

I live in Frederick County and the Hagerstown News were just the opposite of the Washington stations. WHAG said KKT was nervous and considering the crowd was solidly against Ehrlich, Ehrlich did very well.
I thought Ehrlich blew her away

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall at KKT's post "debate" party. I bet she went around asking "but what did it mean when you told me to say....." |

Alright, I'm being kind of a doofus here, but last night when I went thru tvguide.com, I could not find the debate anywhere, so I missed it. It appears that C-span might be re-broadcasting it? I just can't seem to find the details of the when/where. I had been foaming at the mouth to watch this debate for weeks. I'm so bummed that I missed it. Any help from the freepers on when I can see it again?
From what I've been hearing this morning on WBAL, however, Bobby didn't clean the floor with her like I would have anticipated. And booing from the peanut gallery? How juvenile!

Whoohoo- Chip Franklin is on a tear. He just called her and the audience racist! Her lecture was akin saying "Be good and let the racist talk. *wink*wink*". She and her people have no character or dignity. Gotta love it.

No luck on MPT, except that I found that MPT DOES have "Styx: Return to Paradise Theater" on at 10:00pm. SCORE!
Seriously, any other suggestions?

Again, it appears the mainstream press in MD is spinning for KKT. Anyone who watched the debate last night could clearly see who was more articulate and had a clearer grasp of the issues. Beyond that KKT was clearly pandering to the African-American crowd and voting block by heavily playing the race card. I feel sorry for the state of MD if they actually elect KKT. But, with the press on her side it is quite possible that she might pull this out.

Ehrlich would bring in slots to enhance tax revenue and keep dollars that are going to Delaware, West Virginia, etc.
KKT wants no slots, but won't raise taxes. What is she planning to do introduce 30 more lottery games? But I guess that form of gambling is acceptable because the gov't gets the full cut.
