Florida Democrats Unite Behind Jeb

MIAMI BEACH - In another sign of Gov. Jeb Bush's strong bi-partisan support, a who's who of past and present Democrat Party leaders today endorsed Bush and pledged to do "what it takes" to ensure his reelection.

Announced at a press conference in Miami Beach, the "Democrats for Jeb" Steering Committee is made up of dozens of state and local Democrat leaders, including a former Governor, a sitting State Senator, three former Speakers of the House, several incumbent mayors and city commissioners, a former executive director of the Florida Democratic Party and a variety of other community activists and leaders.

"I am proud to once again stand up and proclaim that I am a Democrat for Jeb Bush," stated Sen. Ron Silver. "Four years ago I took a chance by endorsing Jeb and four years later, that chance has paid off not only for me, but more importantly for all Floridians. I pledge to do whatever it takes to make sure he is reelected."

Gov. Bush has always enjoyed the support of Democrats from across the state. In fact, according to the latest Mason-Dixon survey, close to 20% of all Democrats would support Bush over corporate lawyer Bill McBride if the elections were held this week.

"I am a proud lifetime Democrat, representing one of the most Democratic regions of our state, but I am also 100 percent behind Jeb Bush," stated Ft. Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle. "Jeb has been a great governor for all Floridians, Republican, Democrat and Independent alike. He has tirelessly led the fight to improve Florida's public schools, and has shown steadfast leadership in the fight over education reform. Florida is on the right track. I am proud to be a Democrat and I am proud to support Jeb Bush."

"I am honored to have the support of such a distinguished group of Floridians," stated Gov. Bush. "I have always believed that what is right for Florida is much more important than what is right for politics. I am humbled by the trust these fine men and women have placed in me and I promise to them, and every other Floridian, that if I am honored with a second term, I will not let them down."

Democrats joining Bush at the event today were:

Mayor David Dermer of Miami Beach;
Mayor Dick Greco of Tampa;
Mayor Jim Naugle of Fort Lauderdale;
State Senator Ron Silver of North Miami;
Former Speakers of the House James Harold Thompson, T.K. Wetherell and Don Tucker;
Former Agriculture Commissioner and current Citrus Commissioner Bob Crawford;
Miami Beach Commissioners Matti Bower and Luis Garcia;
Florida Board of Education Member Julia Johnson;
Hollywood City Commissioner Keith Wasserstrom;
Homestead City Council Member Judy Waldman;
Mayor of Pembroke Park Annette Wexler;
Pembroke Park City Manager Dr. Bob Levy;
Manny Medina, CEO of Terremark; President and CEO of Peebles Atlantic Development Corporation ;
R. Donahue Peebles; Chairman and Managing Partner, Steel Hector & Davis LLP Joe Klock.

[As not all Steering Committee members were able to attend today's event, the complete list of members is below.]

"Some things are more important than simple party label," stated Former Speaker of the House James Harold Thompson. "Jeb Bush has been an outstanding Governor over the last four years. He has pushed our education system to get the best for our children. He has been a vigilant steward of our environment and a superb leader for Florida's economy. I am proud of our Governor, I am proud to support him and I hope all of my fellow Democrats across Florida will do the same."

I think that this information in the form of a letter to the editor is the way to go, since it is from Jeb's website and not an "unbiased news source" like AP or whatnot (I hope that didn't make you choke on breakfast! $;-), which gives them their easiest excuse to bury this information.

BTTT. It sounds like all these smart dems and indys know a good governor when they see him. Governor Bush makes such a good impression on folks because he's such a great Governor.

(vote smart - not for the old _ _ _ _. joke) FV

A band of freepers are doing a "live" debate thread tonight starting a little before 8:00 p.m. for people who don't get the Gov. Bush v. McLawyer debate in their viewing area. I'll put it in news/activism and call it GOV. BUSH V. MCBRIDE LIVE DEBATE THREAD 9-27-02 if people are looking for it. Fregards, FV

This morning's SHT (that's "Sarasota Herald-Tribune"!) had an article on tonight's debate -- as you already determined, it will indeed be broadcast here in Sarasota country on WEDU (Ch. 3) at 8 PM EST. Jeb's gonna kick his ass.

An update on the article that started this thread -- I just heard (8 AM) Grant Hudson, the news commentator on WDDV (the "Dove, 92.1 FM), talk about this gathering of Democrats in support of Jeb Bush! This should be repeated every 1/2 hour until about 10 AM. Home run -- yeah!

We have a thread here at Free Republic re: the gathering of Democrats who are voting for Governor Bush.

Dems for Jeb here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/757973/posts?page=1

So I say that with regard to Jeb's race, we should not stereotype all dems as stupid. I'm gonna try to attack McLawyer and make it man for man, not party v. party. Obviously the dems above are seeing the light. DEMS FOR JEB are good guys. They may join FR or switch parties eventually.

McBride = MacAuliffe = Clinton. Bubba's legacy lives on.

And VOTE FOR CHARLIE CRIST FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL in November too... Dyer's an embarrassment to the dem party.

Hey, there, I TAGGED MCBRIDE "McLawyer" back in January since I knew he was an attorney - a corporate attorney.

On another note, I have a great jpeg of Ronald McDonald with Jeb Bush. Even Ronald McDonald is a Jeb operative.

Bradenton Herald buried the Dems for Bush story this morning in an article titled, "Bush, McBride focusing on education reforms."

It's in the paper version, but I can't locate it on the web version.

My friend, wherever there is a Holland & Knight Law Office, the newspaper or local media seems to suppress anything positive about Jeb and ENHANCE any so-called news about McLawyer. I think they have a Sarasota branch and know of others around Florida and the USA.

DS, you're not on my ping list again, just thought you'd know if H & K were in Sarasota-Bradenton.

Folks,

Here is a letter to the editor I just wrote to get this in the two papers here in Venice, FL, Sarasota county. Please feel free to copy for your own efforts. This may be the best way of getting this good news in front of our fellow citizens in the shortest time possible.

Letters Editor, The Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Florida Democrats Unite Behind Jeb Bush

On Thursday, September 26th, the "Democrats for Jeb" Steering Committee, a gathering of fifty two present and past Democrat officeholders, met in Miami Beach to publicly announce their support of Florida Governor Jeb Bush and as they stated, "do what it takes” to ensure Jeb's reelection.

This group included such notable political leaders as Senator Ron Silver, Miami Beach Mayor David Dermer, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle and Tampa Mayor Dick Greco.

Among the many ringing endorsements was one from Ft. Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle, who said, "I am a proud lifetime Democrat, representing one of the most Democratic regions of our state, but I am also 100 percent behind Jeb Bush".

Former Speaker of the House James Harold Thompson stated, "Some things are more important than simple party label… I am proud of our Governor, I am proud to support him and I hope all of my fellow Democrats across Florida will do the same".

Looks like these leading Democrats know a good man when they see one, and are not afraid to step across party lines and put the interests of the people of Florida ahead of partisan concerns. Bravo for them!
