New Study- Violence Against Gays is caused by...Gays

The Chronicle is panting breathlessly about a "new study" in the rise of anti-gay violence. There are several problems with the study. Firstly, it isn't true. The Chron reports the following in today's paper:

"Reported cases of domestic violence rose 25 percent in the gay and lesbian community in 2001, according to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, which oversees 26 community organizations throughout the country."

This coalition sounds like a group of concerned parents or soccer moms. You're probably aware how anytime a conservative or a conservative group is quoted in the Official Voice of the Democratic Party, also know as the Chronicle, the words are always modified by the pejoratives "extremist", "conservative", "right wing" or "fundamentalist". A conservative quote is, of course, always "balanced" by the inclusion of at least 3 or 4 quotes from liberal critics. The opposite is never true. That's what the Chron means by "fair and balanced".

However, when a left wing or very liberal group is quoted, no such indentifying labels are used to modify the group's ideological stance. Nor are any there any conservatives quoted to "balance the piece". Hence the Chronicle in this instance published verbatim, not a survey by a neutral scientific study nor from an objective coalition of just any victim groups or community organizations, but a press release from a collection of gay advocacy groups. And they did this without ever bothering to include any identification at all in the entire article as to the nature of the groups making the report.

Here's what the NCAVP group on its own website says of itself:

"Before Officially forming in 1995, NCAVP members collaborated with one another and with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) for over a decade to create a coordinated response to violence against our communities. Since 1984, members have released an annual report every March, promoting public education about bias-motivated crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. As the prevalence of domestic violence in our community has emerged from the shadows, NCAVP member organizations have increasingly adapted their missions and their services to respond to violence within the community as well."

The group specifically says that there is no scientific basis to the study. It's not a peer-reviewed paper. The study doesn't claim to be, nor is it, scientific. It's just a hysterical rant. It's just another press release faxed...

Extraordinary! This might be the first time a special-interest group has attempted to make political capital out of what can only be termed self-abuse. A classic!
