Calif. Enacts Paid Family Leave Bill

Gov. Gray Davis signed a law Monday that makes California the first state to offer workers paid family leave.

The problem with California Democrats "hitting bottom," as you put it, is that they'll take millions of people along with them.

Oh well, I just hope I can figure out when it's time to bail out before it gets too hairy.

I certainly agree that the trend is toward contract labor, instead of salaried positions. It's so much cheaper, and the workers are easily disposed of when they are no longer needed.

It doesn't work for all positions, of course. Many professional positions require someone who has a vested interest in the survival and growth of the company, and an employer is also unlikely to delegate authority for strategic decisions to someone who is little more than day labor.

This legislation will hasten the move toward contract labor in California, something which has serious ramifications for California residents. As just one example, most contract labor personnel don't get company benefits, including health insurance.

I don't want ANY of my money going to the government. Giving it to the officials to "redistribute" is another step toward a totalitarian regime. How about I keep my money and I can pay for myself if I need the time off and my employer agrees to give it to me.

How many companies can survive giving employees six weeks of vacation? I know our office couldn't handle it without actively seeking a replacement. This is just plain STUPID economics. Do we really want to bask in the model Europe has provided us? Don't we realize that "we have it better" because we work harder and longer. Another hit against the already weakened economy. How long can the cherade continue?

The employer NEVER pays. No matter how you slice it, the employee pays. You were saying?

For now.... Remember, liberals always start out slowly and then work there way up to to the real agenda. My guess is the employer and the employee will soon be paying for this and it will be MUCH MUCH MORE than the initial cost. California is already in economical chaos and on the verge of begging the government for a bail out.

Well, not all people are jerks. A good quality small business will get loyal folks who won't abuse the system.

Ya. Until all of the marxist-lead childrens get out of their insitutions of lower living (college). The future is not looking good. Another reason social security won't exist in the future. We're going to have more people with their hands out than people with their hands working.

I used to work there. The abuse of FMLA was one of the final straws. I wish I had kept a dairy. The book would have explained the PO to the country. It is communism in action. :0)

Yeah, my friend would definately agree with you. He says about 10% of the people at the main post office in Cleveland do 90% of the work. The rest of them hide all night.

I beleive that items like the FMLA are part of the reason that the Republicans got a house majority in 1994.

Many people adore communism. They think it's been given a bad name and hasn't been given a fair chance.

And just as homeowners won't be paying for this ill-thought-out law, neither will California businesses. Instead of hiring new employees, California businesses will engage in a combination of overtime, relocating, and outsourcing, as well as moving more and more towards paying for output instead of paying for time.

Bingo! And ultimately when the other states pass this (and they will), that outsourcing goes offshore.

We may also see businesses getting more "corporate welfare" to prevent them from moving. Any way you slice it, the taxpayer gets screwed.

According to Rush, quite awhile ago and on a different subject, businesses are packing up and slowly leaving California. They're moving to places like Iowa.

One irony is that one of the most liberal groups in California is doing this the most often:

Hollywood movie producers.

How many movies are now made in cheaper locations? Either out of California or even out of the United States?

Its fine to be liberal and spend other people's money. Just don't expect them to give up one dime of their own money to support the programs they mandate.
