Law Enforcement Groups to Announce Support for Reauthorizing Federal
Assault Weapons Ban; Ban Will Expire in 2004 To: National Desk Contact: Amy Stilwell of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 202-898-0792
News Advisory:
Major law enforcement groups will gather in the nation's capital on Monday, September 23, to express their strong support for the renewal of the federal Assault Weapons Ban, which is scheduled to expire in September 2004, unless Congress passes legislation to renew it. The Assault Weapons Ban was passed as part of the 1994 Crime Bill. The law required domestic manufacturers to stop production of semiautomatic assault weapons, such as UZIs and AK-47s, and ammunition clips holding more than 10 rounds except for military or police use.
Many Americans do not know that the Assault Weapons ban will expire in 2004, and that the federal lawmakers elected to Congress this November will decide whether this life-saving law remains in effect.
Assault weapons like AK-47s pose a serious threat to our communities and to our public safety officials. The clock is ticking and we must act now to ensure that this legislation is not allowed to expire. Join leaders of our national law enforcement organizations to learn how the federal Assault Weapons Ban will affect our communities and neighborhoods if it is allowed to expire in September 2004, and to hear their united voice in support of reauthorizing this critical law.
WHAT: Press conference to raise awareness that the federal Assault Weapons Ban will expire in September 2004 and to highlight law enforcement's support for the law.

Groups to Announce Support for Overthrowing the Bill of Rights and Committing Treason Against the Rights of Free Men and Women.

Molon Labe !
In a time of war, owning and knowing how to use a firearm isn't primarily a right -- though it is a right -- it is primarily a duty.
Without the pistol grip? I know some such abominations were attempted in an atttempt to get around the CaliforniRat version of the AWB, but in general it's the flash hider and bayonet lug that goes, not the grip. Even then a muzzle brake is often substituted, which of course actually increases controlability in rapid fire, not exactly what Fienstien and Schumer had in mind. :) Loss of the grip pretty much ruins the ergonomics of most guns designed with one in the first place. There are AK-47 derivites, most notably the VEPR, available without the pistol grip, but their ergonomics weren't all that great to begin with. You can even get those as a shotgun, .410 or 12 ga., or in .308 rather than more anemic 7.62X39.
I myself have an H&K G-3, rebuilt on a new receiver so as to get around the "once a machine gun, always a machine gun", BATF rule, it's missing the flash hider but has a muzzle brake instead, and is sans bayonett lug. However it also has a nice rail built in to the new receiver, suitable for mounting a 'scope, which I have. So now I not only have an "assault weapon" in all but legal definition, I also have a "sniper rifle". Tsk, Tsk.
Be nice to not just hold the ground we have for once, but actually gain something.
Yeh, it would, wouldn't it. I think there is a chance, what with the AG, and the 5th circuit, declaring the 2nd amendment to protect an individual right. Sort of hard to defend both that position and a restriction on what sorts of individual arms a citizen can aquire. Not that politicians don't do similiar things 3 or 4 times a day...beore breakfast.
Congressman BillyBob, or rather his alter ego, differs from that opinon, and the gun issue, terrorism, the economy and taxes have nothing to do with that predicition. Rather it's a matter of incumbency and campaign fundraising. See the PDF file
