Rice and German-American relations: "poisoned atmosphere"

Friday September 20, 2002 - 23h32 GMT

BERLIN, 21 seven (AFP) - the German-American relations cross "an atmosphere poisoned" after the remarks lent to a minister German comparing the methods of Hitler with those of the president George W Bush and the critics of the chancellor Gerhard Schroeder against the Iraqi policy to the United States, estimates the adviser for the safety of Mr. Bush, Condoleezza Rice.

In an interview published Saturday by the economic daily newspaper Financial Times Deutschland (FTD), Condoleezza Rice declares: "I will say that lately we do not cross a happy period in our relations with the Germans. There were things of said which are completely unacceptable. The declarations of the Minister for Justice, even if if only the half of what is lent to him were really known as, are quite simply inadmissible ".

"How can one pronounce in the same sentence the name of Hitler and that of the American president? And, especially, how that can it leave the mouth a German to the glance devotion the United States when it acted to release the Germans of Hitler "?, add it.

According to Condoleezza Rice, "in Germany an atmosphere was thus created which is poisoned".

The social democrat Minister for Justice, Herta Daeubler-Gmelin, contradicted Friday the remarks which to him had been lent Thursday by a local newspaper, Schwaebisches Tagblatt, which however maintained its version.

In front of the climbing of the polemic in Germany, where the preserving opposition requires the resignation of the minister, and the sharp reactions of Washington, the Secretary of State Colin Powell announcing his "indignation" and the spokesman of the White House Ari Fleischer speaking about "scandalous and unexplainable" declarations, the social democrat chancellor Gerhard Schroeder addressed Friday evening a personal letter to George W Bush.

"I wish here to say you to which point I consider it regrettable that the declarations charged to the Minister German for Justice could wound you deeply", Mr. Schroeder underlines.

"the minister ensured me that it did not pronounce these remarks which were allotted to him, which it also publicly explained", continues Mr. Schroeder, adding: "I can guarantee that whoever making the bringing together enters the American president to you and a criminal does not have his place in my government".

According to Schwaebisches Tagblatt, the quotation in question is as follows: with a war against Iraq, "Bush wants to divert the attention of the problems of domestic policy. It is an appreciated method. Hitler already also made ".

At the time of a conference press convened in urgency in Berlin Friday at the end of the afternoon, at two days of the legislative elections in Germany, Mrs. Daeubler-Gmelin affirmed "to have evoked the word +Hitler+ well", "but by specifying that there was not to be bond with president Bush". "the quotations, for the majority, do not correspond so that I said", it continued.

Don't you mean Bossy Wessy? :-)

LOL.That could be a bestselling doll this Christmas. Pull the string and she points her finger at other dolls and yells. "Nazi, Nazi, Nazi." Pull it again and she yells "You're like Hitler."

I wonder if Herta is mad at GWB for not inviting her to his ranch.

As another Freeper recalled the great words of Winston Churchill: the Germans have a curious opposition to wars they do not start.
