"He noted that black youths – many of them poor – do not enjoy the same recreational and social opportunities as whites..."

Now, that's the first time I've ever heard rape described as a recreational or social activity.

Must be the ebonics.

Shoot, I read the name of the paper and jumped to conclusions.

Well, same principle applies. States allowed to set their own standards.

Blacks are never going to get out of the racist swamps as long as they let themselves be used by the democrats/socialists.

The true racists constantly use that worn-out crutch.

According to the article, "No matter the outcome, residents say, the case has divided blacks and whites, parents and school administrators, students and neighbors:," it sounds as if a wedge has been driven into the relations of neighbors, thanks to those who claim they cannot be racists.

Why no mention of the reaction of Native American community in this entire article?

I would imagine they have some strong feelings about what was done to this poor girl.

The Rev. Ronald Boyd said two of the former players attended Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, where he is pastor.

This guy needs to be defrocked or horsewhipped. How could he let his flock go so far astray. "It's ok if you rape someone boys, just make sure you score that touchdown. Jesus will forgive you" Horse hockey!

If this preacher had done his job at least two of these animals would not have raped

God Save America (Please)

Excellent point. Perhaps because she was only a prop?

Being an Indian/Natvie American must be tantamount to being white nowadays.

I have been to Duncan many times. Its a small town, for gosh sakes. You could probably walk whereever you want to go. Its not like getting from Oak Cliff to Plano.

I looked it up in my Delorme map program. It's nothing more than a wide spot in the road.

Duncan Statistics

Also found the above via Google.

I grew up in Duncan (DHS 1975) and wondered what the hometown paper had to say. Didn't find any news in the Duncan Banner, but did find the following in the "police reports". (remember, this is a small town paper) My memories of Duncan are of a small conservative community that took pride in personal responsibility. These kids will not have an easy time in the courts or in jail. But lets not forget that terrified young teen from an even smaller community.

Motions previously filed by attorneys for Mario Flowers and Daschion Scott were denied this past week by the Court of Criminal Appeals. The motion to certify the two Duncan residents as juveniles was denied by a 5-0 vote. Flowers and Scott are accused with three other Duncan residents — Timon Kirk, Aaron Rochell and Zachary Smith — of raping a 14-year-old girl on Nov. 8, 2001, in the parking lot of Halliburton Stadium. The incident on the Duncan High School campus allegedly occurred during a non-school related sporting event. The five, who face various sexual assault charges, have been charged under the Youthful Offender Act. At the time of the alleged incident, Flowers was 17 years old, Scott, 15; Kirk, 17; Rochell, 17; and Smith, 16. Trial dates for each have not yet been set.

They came from the same town Tom Cruise came from, not that that means much. It's an affluent community. There was a book written about the incident, I believe its title is "Our Boys." I remember reading that this group of kids were so dangerous and destructive all through their school years that fully 25% of the students left the public schools for private and parochial schools because their parents didn't want their kids involved with them. They were just a dangerous group of kids who were catered to by the school and others because they were "winners."

For what it's worth, Duncan claims Ron Howard (Opie) and Roger Miller as famous natives. Ron Howard's grandmother owned a former hotel on Main Street.

We were already hurting" when it came to race relations, said Don Taylor, the lone black member of Duncan's park board
Yeah, so was the little 14 year old Indian girl.

The real outrage here is that none of these perps are to be tried as adults.

Interesting. They sound like a bunch of self-annointed Kennedys.

Your last sentence reminded me of something. In the '80's I lived in South Jersey, and there was a day-care center on my way to work that was named "Youngstars." I remember the sign they had out in front: "YOUNGSTARS" with little stars floating around it.

I always thought that was a recipe for trouble. I always wondered what the parents were like that would find that name appealing. Maybe the "winners" of Glen Ridge are the answer.

I'm not really that cynical (though there are those on FR who will say that I should be).

which such an incident could occur. He noted that black youths – many of them poor – do not enjoy the same recreational and social opportunities as whites.

Ok, "No recreation tonight, let's go out and rape a 14 year old."

Don't you just feel sorry for these poor downtrodden youth?

"recreational and social opportunities ..."

Duncan, OK is not a tiny little backwoods town. Last time we drove through, it seems to be a progressive city with a population of about 40,000. Here is the url to their EDC http://www.ok-duncan.com/html/qol.html

What would prevent kids from having recreational and social opportunities is they do not want to participate. Most communities, and I am sure Duncan, has a high school with a myriad of athletic, academic and fine arts programs for kids to become involved in. The city most likely has a recreation center and/or boys and girls club. There are opportunities ... one must be willing to pariticipate to receive their benefits.

as far as I'm concerned those people who live on 'the hill' who claim that these kids should be given a break because they're black are just plain racists. They ought to be told they're racists, people should turn a cold shoulder to them. I don't know what kind of church they go to. But probably a KKK type of a church. we should ask them if they wear black sheets or white sheets at that church. They should run editorials in the local paper mocking and ridiculing them in just this manner. If they want to be racists, then why don't they just leave Duncan and take their crap with them. That's how we should speak to them.

Imagine that, justice, according to these racists, is determined by the color of your skin.

Their motion to be tried as juveniles was denied. They will still receive adult level sentences. Under the youthful offender act they will serve their time in juvenile detention facilities until they turn 21, then be transferred to the state pen.
