Roger Ebert: 'Give her dad credit for a 'yob' well-done'

Posted on Wednesday, July 25 @ 09:43:56 EDT/span>
By Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The British have a useful word, "yob," which the dictionary defines as an "uncouth, ignorant, loutish youth." The word is traditionally applied to males, but in these liberated times can also refer to females, and might have been in use last week at Buckingham Palace when Barbara Bush, the president's daughter, appeared for lunch wearing denims. But of course I'm talking about the president's daughter. The other Barbara Bush, the president's mother, would sooner appear in a wet T-shirt contest at Hooters than wear jeans to lunch with the queen.

There was a time in living memory when no one needed to be told that you should dress up when invited for lunch at Buckingham Palace. Of course, the younger Barbara was not exactly invited to lunch at the palace. She decided to come "on a last-minute whim," according to the Times of London. Perhaps that means she brought along nothing else to wear.

It is not uncommon for American students to visit Europe with three clothing items jammed in a backpack, but then again, they mostly dine at McDonald's. In a similar situation, invited to lunch with the queen, every woman I have ever met in my entire life would have cried: "I don't have anything to wear!"

But perhaps denims are Barbara's native garb. It is perfectly appropriate for a Japanese woman to wear a kimono to the palace, or an Indian a sari. Perhaps Texans wear jeans as their traditional costume. Using the same loophole, she could have added a Dale Earnhardt T-shirt.

At the palace, which has had yobs even in the royal family (the duke of Windsor comes to mind), Barbara's unexpected appearance was greeted unflappably. She was not invited to dine in the 1844 Room with the queen and the duke, but sent "below the salt" to the Billiard Room, with the master of the household and other lesser dignitaries.

Meanwhile, her father was having his own difficulties, appearing at lunch with a wet suit and shoes after being drenched in a sudden shower. That the president of the United States cannot get himself from his bulletproof Cadillac limousine to lunch with the queen without being caught in the rain is perhaps an insight into his need for a missile shield.

Barbara's grandparents, so much more widely traveled than the president, no doubt cringed with embarrassment that their grandchild turned up at the palace in jeans. Did Barbara's father and mother speak with her about her fashion sense? This is, I realize, a "family matter," but yob culture begins at home.

George W. Bush was so indifferent to the world that in the years before he became president he made only two overseas trips, both for business, neither for curiosity. No wonder he wants to beak the missile treaty, alienate NATO, ignore global warming and reinstall Russia and China as enemies: Those foreign countries scarcely exist in his imagination. Why go to Australia when you have the Outback Steakhouse right here at home?

Our previous president studied at Oxford. This one was given a sightseeing tour of London and said it was "diverse and clean." The Times also said Bush gave a "pep talk" to children about the advantages of reading over television. The children did not ask him to name the last book he had read. Just good manners, I guess.

He doesn't have enough brains to come out of the rain. These are the people who called the Clintons "trailer trash". Look who's talking!

His well-placed gibes about Smirk's "Yurp-on-$2.50-a-day" bumpkin-ness aside, who is Roger Ebert to be commenting on any of this? Pardon me if I'm ignorant of his repertoire of deep thought and/or social commentary, but isn't he a movie reviewer?

And why is this "news", anyway? Was Mr. Ebert not aware of Barb's mom's strong assertion that her daughter showed up in a dress? If so, there goes his credibility as a "journalist", right down the crapper with that of his fellows in the biz.

I'm weary of all this "celebrity-hound" crap, anyway; if Smirk's gurlz get busted runnin' a dope ring, or save some children from a burning tenement, or win a Nobel prize (sh'yuh), then let's give 'em some headlines.

Otherwise, gossip is just gossip, eh?

I'm with Rev_Cletus on this, especially as Laura Bush denied that it happened. Yeah, someone's word might not suffice at a hearing on missile disarmament, but when we're talking about what someone wore on a certain day, I think we can take that as adequate. This one's the kind of cheap potshot we really don't need to be doing. . .especially if we've got the facts wrong.

Well, Dubya’s reign—as this last trip to Europe exemplifies—is really just a cinematic or theatrical construction. I mean, we all know that Dubya is just pretending—not even acting, really—to be the president, while the directors and producers of his administration (Dick, Karl, the NRA, etc.) try to present the whole affair in an engaging and comforting fashion. So who better to comment when the performance goes poorly than Roger Ebert? Granted, this piece may not have been necessary, but his other writings about Dubya have been quite good. Plus, Shrub did still steal Ebert’s thumbs up move: http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/p/nm/20010718/ts/imdf18072001085900a.html

It may not be big news about what a presidents kid decides to wear but it is news that the so called commander and chief of the Free World and his entire staff does not have the protocol knowledge or proper respect for the figure head of our closest ally.

Second, reporters were not allowed to take photos of the kid for security reasons, if she did wear a dress it would have been shown around the world just like the Popes visit, where they did clean her up for the occasion.

Third Laura Bush stared into the camera and lied to cover-up even something as insignificant as this. These people have no problem at all to state a blatant lie as fact,
and the sad part is the media and public at large lets them get away with it every time.

This was news in England because they take etiquette, protocol, and tradition so seriously there. You can bet the child of one of England's PMs wouldn't make that kind of mistake. It would be similar to Barb and Laura not covering their heads in the presence of the Pope.

I'm going to bet Barb was indeed wearing jeans and that the real story here is that Laura is lying to cover it up. The reason for my skepticism? My experience is that every time a conservative opens his/her mouth, they're telling a lie.

I can't believe there aren't pictures of the event. "I tell ya, the truth is out there."

I'm with jemnote here. The whole Bush presidentiary is just a good ol' Texas smirk for the cameras while the evil bassids in charge rape the country and pillage all they can, back there in the shadows. When the US figurehead and his yob children can't get it right at a state dinner, it deserves to be news. When Laura asserts there was a dress, I'd think someone could produce a photo if we are to believe her at all (why else would we?). I'd be interested in reading what, if anything, the British press is saying about all this. In the meantime, rev_cletus, though you no doubt mean well, being nice hasn't achieved a thing for us and taking the high road while the Bush crime family and its affiliated scoundrels were stealing the Florida election got us neither justice nor a fair outcome. As for the qualification of Roger Ebert to comment, if you read his reviews you will recognize him as a man of intelligence with a strong sense of context. What better qualification to comment on the doings of Shrub and his radical right-wing cronies?

oh PLEASE!
It's called MANNERS and RESPECT.

Laura Bush is lying about the dress, and here's why - she wouldn't need to even make a comment if Babs WAS wearing a dress.

AND - Baby Babs was NOT invited to lunch with HRH, she CRASHED. That would be fauxpas #2.

The entire family lies. It's genetic. Jenna lies about her age, and who she is; her Dad lies about global warming, the tax cut, and actually being elected; her grandfather about... most everything... the list is endless.

Here's the deal - that family is so wrapped up in money they have no clue about manners since they are free - they cost nothing, but are priceless, and those who possess them, are rich indeed.

This was an amazingly stupid article and the commentary is equally stupid. If the goal is to criticize anything Bush related(ala the disgusting Republicans with Clinton), I could almost understand it.
However, if an American child(o.k. teenager) lacks respect for royalty and its institutions I can certainly understand and relate to it. I even admire the teenage rebellion of it all.

Just a reminder, one of the disgusting things about Poppy Bush was that sickening war to restore a royal family to Kuwait, when the Kuwaitis who actually did the fighting(while the royalty partied in Paris)wanted democracy.

Wonder if the Pavarotti Doppelganger will write a similar article about Chelsea at Wimbeldon?

For the benefit of all, I added some of the commentary from SmirkingChimp.com. To think so-called "intellectuals" can engage in embarrassing logic-leaps and hyperbole is really shocking.

They know they hate conservatives, but they don't know why.

I do believe they would round us up and put us into concentration camps if they could.

Drop Tubby a line at Roger Ebert

Some of the "User Info" stuff is hilarious.

The most venemous is from an "educator" in New York.

Next thing you know he'll be demanding that the leader of the free world bow and scrape before the queen, too.

Wearing jeans sends a clear message, whether Barb intended it or not - "I am not your subject, and I don't get dressed up just to go visit a rich old biddy."

Ebert makes an ass of himself on a daily basis. Whenever he trashes a movie I go see it and it usually turns out to be pretty good and a box office hit. He's no more quaified to critique the President and his family than he is to critique movies.

This is really funny stuff.

It is amazing to me, that with so much stuff going on the world, they still concern themselves primarily with fashion and feelings.

This whole article, for me, is the equivalent of a drunk in a cheap bar complaining about some minutiae. Like I'm gonna even care what he has to say, much less waste my time listening or reading. The responses were certainly revealing, however...

Why are so many Americans so smitten with royalty that they give two figs what another American wears when they visit a member of any royal family?

News flash - over 200 years ago we used deadly force to throw off this kind of despotic nepotism, and with it the notion that a person is due even an ounce of additional respect just because they happened to be born into a particular family. She committed no more of a faux pas than showing up to a Wall Street business meeting in jeans, and anyone who thinks differently should move to Canada where idiotic fawning over royalty is still socially acceptable.

I have no idea.

That question is actually important.

I don’t see how. She’s a un-elected woman, with no role in setting public policy, commenting on her daughter’s fashion sense, or lack thereof.

I’m having trouble thinking of a singular less important issue.
