AS A result of the continuing investigation on the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) network, the Internal Security Department (ISD) has arrested 21 additional persons suspected of involvement in terrorism-related activities last month.
The Home Affairs Ministry on Monday said the suspects, who were arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA), are all Singapore citizens.
Nineteen of those arrested are current or previous JI members, with most belonging to or linked to JI operational cells.
Two others are linked to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a secessionist group in the Philippines.
A few have reportedly undergone military training at Al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan and at the MILF's Camp Abu Bakar in Mindanao island in southern Philippines.
Several have conducted reconnaissance and surveys of selected targets in Singapore on the instruction of their JI leaders, most of whom were arrested in December 2001.
The latest arrests are the result of investigations conducted after the initial arrest of 15 persons in December 2001. The 15 included 13 members of the JI, who were detained in January 2002 under ISA Orders of Detention.
1) New York Al-Quaida ring busted up, put in jail, and identified as registered Democrats.
2) Ramzi Bin-Alshibh in custody in Pakistan, with many others dead and some unknown big-wig in hand. Extradition pending.
3) Singapore nabs a bunch.
4) Saudi Arabia sees the writing on the wall, and shows it will allow US action from its territory (when the U.N. sucks it up and approves action)
What other good news, ladies and gentlemen?
Whomever they have in custody in Gitmo or Bhagram, they sure are "singing". My guess is that they have ratched up the pliers to the testes a notch. If it takes beating the crud out of these scum, I'm all for it as it exposes each little cell here and there like ant colonies unearthed by Uncle Sam's big global spade shovel. Of course, a few good Singaporean canings in prison down there get elicit some more pieces of the puzzle.
S'pore has taken all of this very seriously since 9-11 -- they don't take kindly to anything that might upset the peace and social order there. For the last year, they have enlisted Ghurkas to guard several Embassies and high-profile American entities, like the American Club.
These arrests will lead to more arrests as these guys begin to talk. These arrests will create movement within these organisations as they seek more safe/secure hiding places. These SOB's are unraveling right before our eyes.
Ha! The "Moro Islamic Liberation Front." I wonder if they are a new group naming themselves Moros, because they are fondly remembering the old days, or if they are the actual descendants of that very difficult group we dealt with in the Philippines during the Spanish American War? IIRC, the Moros of that time were drugged up, and couldn't be physically stopped when they attacked our soldiers -- they simply couldn't feel anything and they raged until their bodies gave out completely. In response, the Army began using the 45. That did the trick. It would knock down even a Moro!
