DETROIT (AP) _ Former President Clinton is offering his bigger-than-life persona to help Michigan's Democratic candidates raise money and boost enthusiasm.

Clinton was scheduled to be in the Detroit-area Friday for two fund-raisers and a Democratic rally at the Fox Theatre. ``Most voters, after a couple of years of George W. Bush, look fondly on the Clinton years,'' state Democratic Party chairman Mark Brewer told the Detroit Free Press for a Friday story. ``The economy was in better shape; foreign policy was handled better.'' More than 3,000 free tickets were available for gubernatorial candidate Jennifer Granholm's event at the Fox.

Before the rally, Clinton was to be the featured guest at a fund-raiser at the Bingham Farms home of Doreen Hermelin for U.S. Sen. Carl Levin of Detroit. Tickets were $5,000 and $1,000. Later he would attend a $1,000-per-ticket fund-raiser for Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlinga's congressional campaign at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Warren.

State party officials said they expected Clinton's visit to net several hundred thousand dollars, to be used for Democratic campaigns. The former president was the subject for partisan bickering.

Rusty Hills, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, accused Granholm of putting money above ethics by welcoming Clinton's assistance in raising funds for Democratic candidates, The Oakland Press of Pontiac reported.

Granholm campaign spokesman Chris De Witt said Levin invited Clinton to Michigan. While Granholm ``does not agree with (Clinton) on every issue and everything he's done,'' she welcomes his presence as a popular figure people want to see, De Witt said.

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Former President Bill Clinton told several hundred Democrats they need to raise at least $2 million for the party's candidate for governor if they want to be competitive with Republican Bob Taft, who has more than $8 million in the bank.

A top strategist for Tim Hagan disagreed with Clinton's assessment of the campaign's cash needs, but said the former president's appearance was a major boost for the campaign and raised about $250,000.

Clinton, making his first visit to Ohio since a May 2000 visit to Columbus, said it's not necessary for Hagan to match Taft dollar for dollar, but Hagan needs "a couple million more" for name recognition.

Taft reported $8.4 million available cash at the end of August, while Hagan had $586,107.

Clinton said the race is not out of reach for Hagan.

"With barely over 50 percent name recognition, he's inside of 10 points in this race," Clinton told an enthusiastic crowd at Cleveland Convention Center. "You can win this race."

The Columbus Dispatch released a poll Sept. 1 that showed Taft with an 8-percentage-point lead over Hagan.

Hagan consultant Gerald Austin dismissed Clinton's estimates of the campaign's fund-raising needs.

"Bill Clinton understands conventional campaigning," Austin said. "We are not running a conventional campaign."

Hagan has said he will not run television ads and is instead putting advertisements on the Internet.

Clinton spoke at a $1,000-per-plate fund-raiser for Hagan before the public rally, which featured the Democratic candidates for statewide office. Clinton was clearly the star, walking on stage to a standing ovation while the sound system blared his signature song, "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac.

Outside the hall, 20-year-old Jennifer Robbers, an Ohio University junior, said the event was "awesome." She and 38 other OU students rented a bus for the 3 1/2 hour ride to Cleveland.

"With Hagan and Bill Clinton in the same room -- you can't get any better than that," Robbers said. "They have the best charisma."
