Fox News just broke in with an alert. Special Op's are now searching a Liberian flagged ship 8 miles off the coast of NJ looking for nuclear material. More information to follow.

AN/PDR 70 is carried on USN ships. Size of 2 stacked cases of beer, weighs 60lbs, probe is pretty fragile. I retired in '95, they may have something newer.

The only thing I heard, was that it hit a rock and exploded. Sounds a little strange to me and their press are not like western press. Sounds to me like they were shooting an action scene for a movie.... Lots of things blow up in film that usually don't blow up in real life. ;-)

Most fissile isotopes are alpha emitters (Pu-239/U-235) and thus are hard to detect. Pu-239 does have other Pu-isotopes in it (Pu-241 & other odd-numbered isotopes (isotope separation is hard to do) and low-levels of other elements).
If it is a 'dirty' bomb then neutrons are a distinct possibility.

From what I read in the paper, it was more of a "Darwin" experience. It seems that after they crashed their ship on some rocks and started leaking petroleum products, some dork went out on a life raft and shot off a flare. The flare landed on the oil slick and blew up the ship.

Lots of things blow up in film that usually don't blow up in real life. ;-) Reminds me of a scene in the movie "Top Secret", where a cheaply made foreign car very gently nudges the bumper of a rugged German-made car, and instantly explodes. Dateline NBC must have drawn inspiration from this scene.

The story was that they ran aground in the dark, and then they decided to shoot some flares off. Kaboom.

Top Secret! is a Ford Pinto -- a cheapo compact from the '70s infamous for exploding in rear-end collisions.
"Ist dein Tochter achtzehn, bitte?" Top Secret! is one of my all-time favorite flicks. It's worty watching just to hear the excruciating "East German National Anthem"...

CONFIRMATION OF NEUTRON EMISSIONS.
Earlier someone was talking about the neutron emissions. Here's an excerpt from a news story
A U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told NBC News that the NEST scientists said the initial readings indicated the presence of both gamma and neutron emissions, which can be an indicator of an improvised nuclear device.

It was a Pinto! Yes, that's right...I remember now. I thought they were making fun of the general tendency in movies for cars to explode at the least provocation, just to make the movie more exciting. I didn't know of the propensity for rear-end collisions causing explosions.
