DANBURY — Former President Bill Clinton visits Danbury today to raise campaign cash for U.S. Rep. James Maloney, a Democrat in one of the most closely watched congressional races in the nation.
Clinton and Maloney will speak at a dinner at the Amber Room Colonnade that runs from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $175 each. There will also be a private reception at 6:30 p.m. at the restaurant. Tickets for the reception are $1,000 each.
"President Clinton saw the greatest economic expansion in history,” said Betsy Arnold, spokeswoman for Maloney. "Like President Clinton, Jim (Maloney) wants America to return to sound fiscal policy so we can strengthen our schools, Social Security and Medicare and pay down the debt and grow our national economy again.”
Clinton first visited Danbury in 2000. He was in the final year of his presidency and spoke mostly about education to a crowd of 2,500 at Western Connecticut State University. That visit was also on behalf of Maloney, who went on to win re-election over then-challenger Mark Nielsen.
This year, Maloney is locked in a battle with Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Johnson, currently the 6th District congresswoman. Due to Connecticut’s slow population growth, the state lost one sweat in Congress, forcing the two incumbents to battle for a new, larger 5th District. Both parties and related special interests are spending large sums on the race because it is one that could determine the balance of power in Congress.
The Clinton visit is the latest by political luminaries to the 5th District. President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have campaigned for Johnson, while U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-NY, and House Minority Whip Nancy Pelosi, the highest ranking woman in Congress, campaigned for Maloney.
Maloney and Johnson have entered the post-Labor Day heart of the campaign season when each spends money on intense television advertising campaigns to try to gain the upper hand in the Nov. 5 election.
