Sustainability is a euphemism for a centrally planned economy antithetical to the consumerism of the the free market.

"Poverty is not the problem but development is. Until recently, people could feed themselves very satisfactorily without money, and usually maintain themselves in excellent health. Development requires a cancer-like expansion." The only solution is to put development into reverse. "This will mean most of us will live in largely, but not entirely, self-sufficient villages, geared to small-scale, low-tech production of food and artifacts." These environmental whack jobs are about the most lunatic political activists in the world. They are certifiably insane if they really believe that BS. I'm talking mad dog foaming at the mouth mad. It's a wonder they have any supporters at all.

Sustainability is only for the peons. Their rulers come to the US and Europe for medical care, nice apartments overlooking the Seine, er- female companionship, and - well, everything their crumb-bums subjects who are hiking 10 miles a day to the nearest well just can't fit into their busy schedules.

There's a lot to be said for life expectancies of 35 years and infant mortality rates of 50%. Women dying of childbirth complications could also skyrocket. But really, wouldn't we all be a lot happier?
