Here's another bit of Zero T idiocy:

By all means, let's take this senior with high grades, ban him from campus, and send him to an "alternative school" where the real problem children are.

A good student and athlete is suspended because there were two pocket knives in his mothers car that he drove to school.
Why was a security guard searching cars in the first place? Are the school tyrants afraid that someone will hijack the school? Shades of airport hysteria!

When I was a boy, pocket knives were standard issue for kids by the time they reached the age of 7. We used to spend hours amusing ourselves with mumblety-peg.
These people are totally NUTS!

I may get flamed, but here goes...
If I were this kid and this a$$hole Bachman screwed up my chances of getting into the college of my choice...
He'd better be praying his fire insurance is up to date.
The suspension and banishment are just plain mean spirited. I'd be willing to bet there is some sort of history between these two. Why would a security guard be searching this kid's car in the first place? To see into the door pockets you have to open the vehicle. How did he gain access? Man this stuff pis$$es me off.

Don't forget to vote on the Survey.

Sounds more like "zero intelligence". BTW, I thought "tolerance" was supposed to be the ultimate virtue, to the soft- and non-thinking statists who make these wacky laws??

DAMN IT!! Why don't they EVER explain how and why a secuirty guard was searching the car??? This is not close to the first time. Why in the hell was the car being searched.

Wow, common sense is prevailing 42-0-0. Did you catch that? Every single person who has voted, has done so against zero tolerance!

I am on the verge of tears after reading the article. As a parent I am terrified that this will happen to one of my children. A student can be expelled from either of my children's schools for having a picture of a gun or for writing the word "gun" in a notebook. Bring the wrong magazine to school and you will be expelled. Utter the wrong words and you are out.
I suspect that if a student had the text of the 2nd Amendment on his locker door he would be thrown out.
I can't believe this is happening in America.

Schools search student vehicles all the time. Sometimes they even bring out the drug dogs.

He'd better be praying his fire insurance is up to date. It occurs to me that zero-tolerance policies are an excellent way for a school official with an over-insured house to set up a perfect frame-up....

S-T, take a look at the discussion thread on the poll website. Some of the posts will make you take back your comments about common sense.

I've been following this locally for a few days. The young man was driving his mother's car because his car was parked behind hers in the drive and she needed to go, so she traded cars for the day. The mother's car did not have the required parking permit sticker giving security the excuse to search the car. The pocket knives were in the car because he had been installing some speakers for his mom. Totally blown out of proportion, but what do you expect from zero-tolerance policies?

If people want to see this kind of thing stop forever, there is one sure way to make it happen. The people in this school district should start a petition drive to get an issue on the ballot that will recend all school tax levies in the district until the zero tollerance policy is done away with. Cut off their cashflow, and you'll see a bad policy done away with in record time.

How did the guard gain access to the car? Did he break in?
To: okchemyst
Unbelievable. Remember the girl who almost didn't graduate last year because she left a BUTTER knife in her car after moving one weekend?

Personally I'm the type to test the First Amendment in cases like these, but I certainly would not put the onus of the consequences on my child's shoulders without their informed consent. As an alternative measure may I suggest that you go through their textbooks for references to guns or arms? You would be mostly likely to find such in the history textbooks. Even if they think guns are evil they are likely to mention that Kennedy and Lincoln were shot. You could then attempt to get the books pulled from the classrooms and school immediately. But again, this would be much more useful if it were a counter-suit to a suspension.
I am young enough to have some experience with Zero Tolerance. My younger sister has a friend who is seeing a neurologist for severe migraines and is diabetic. When she was in highschool and a group of seven other student slammed her head into a metal doorframe, with no resistance or provocation, her father actually had to argue for her not to be suspended for fighting. The neurologist's report that she had on file went a long way towards that.

Mahan was stopped by security as he entered the parking lot. My understanding is that he gave permission for the search when confronted with the lack of a parking sticker.

Then don't send your child to the government run indoctrination centers. Oklahoma has very lenient homeschooling laws. This kid should tell them to go to hell and that he isn't going to any freaking "alternative" school. He should tell them to kiss his @$$ and kiss away the state aid he brings to them. This happened in Texas recently and people were outraged. They made the school administrators look like complete jerks. The kid was reinstated.
