[history]
Los Angeles -- In a critical meeting in his effort to court gay Republicans, Bill Simon expressed unqualified support for gay equality and the rights of domestic partners, say several members of the gay community who attended the meeting.
Simon's support for gay rights issues at the July 23 meeting was similar to positions the Republican candidate for governor took in answering a questionnaire later from a gay group, the Log Cabin Republicans -- positions he disavowed this week in the face of pressure from conservatives and the religious right.

Whatever the truth is, this is not good for Simon. I can hope for the best, but I hope this is not a wasted opportunity to oust Davis.

That's the problem. Whether the charge is true or not, Simon is losing credibility. If I were a CA voter I would still vote for Simon, but he is alienating voters on both sides of this issue in the GOP. Good thing Davis really sucks or this would be over.

Sounds like a busy road these days at the intersection of of Sabotauge Boulevard and Sell-out Avenue.

but I hope this is not a wasted opportunity to oust Davis. Especially since it seems that the Rats will still continue their strangle-hold on the state.
Rats have the reverse Midas touch - turning the Golden State in the Basest State.

B.S.! Go, Simon!!!!!!!! (DUMP DAVIS!)
To: Saundra Duffy
Can you debate/converse/exchange facts and insight, rather than shout and campaign like a broken record, for a change?
To: Saundra Duffy
Simon needs to put this to bed. Beyond the letter to State Senator Ray Haynes, Simon has done little to deny what has been reported, albeit by the SF Chronicle. I'm still looking for the truth here.

Although this does matter, in the long run it doesn't if we want to dump Davis. Keep our eyes on the prize folks. Simon needs our support.

This is what happens when you try to fit a camel-load of conservative principles through the needle's eye of contemporary liberal political correctness.
The only thing for conservatives to say to "gay activists" is:
I have plenty of homosexual friends. I wish them life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I will fight to the death to make sure you have exactly the same rights as every other individual American and are not persecuted for your condition. But I will not support special privileges for you or any other self-selected group, I will not sign a "Gay Pride" proclamation, I will not use the powers of the state to punish organizations like the Boy Scouts that exclude you, and I will not waffle on any of these positions. Thank you and have a nice day.

I think it is becoming more obvious by the day that, while he is better than the current alternative, Gray Davis, Bill Simon is in way over his head when it comes to being a candidate for governor. This is what happens when your first run for office is at such a high level. There has been no opportunity to get all the small details ironed out away from the massive media scrutiny that comes with running for governor of California. Yes, the media itself loves to pile on a conservative, but for gosh sakes Simon just keeps giving them more and more to work with. He is an honorable man, but I have no doubt that he is trying to fib his way out of this particular flap by blaming it on some unnamed staffer. It's a shame he has squandered this golden opportunity to take back California.

Running for any office as a republican in the People's Republic of Kalifornia is a Catch-22, you're basically screwed when it comes to your platform issues...
It seems like a "you're either for us, or against us..." in CA..
Just my observations...

The San Fran. Chronicle cannot be trusted. I made the mistake of trusting them last week when they said Simon filled out the questionairre, when in fact, it was his aide, and Simon never saw it. I believe Simon over a liberal nazi rag any day of the week. I am only sorry that I believed it in the first place. I believe what comes out of the man's mouth, and must give him the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

...you're basically screwed when it comes to your platform issues... When in doubt, stick to moral absolutes. This never fails.
