I don't need a gun to defend myself. I can take down a man. I have before.

Every man? Glad to meet you, Butterbean.

Men armed with knives and clubs? Glad to meet you, Bruce Lee.

Will you be able to do so in your 60's? Glad to meet you, Joe Foreman.

You are so full of it. You think you can take on the world. You'd probably fold after first punch in most scuffles. Add to that the fact that Mr. Selfish (you) only seem to care if *you* are safe. What about slightly-built men and women? What about the elderly? Just throw them to the wolves, right?

Go back to England. We don't want your sort here.

So, you karate kicked an attacker, punched him in the ear, etc, and then didn't see that he was arrested. What that probably DID teach him was next time take a GUN. Great job.

I still can't shake the sneaking suspicion I have from your profile that "UT + Languages Major = Daddy's money" Common sense seems to have skipped your generation, and if you want to talk reparations, I think you owe your daddy a big apology, AND monthly installments on that UT languages degree. Why wasn't your mind as open to your father's values as it was to that Austin liberal drivel?

Let's get back to the matter at hand. What would you have advised the Georgia husband to do when the gentleman invaded their home?

"His probabtion would have ended in January 2005, she added. "

Actually a fair and unbiased probation hearing. Would that all individuals on probation, who choose this type of behavior, received the same quick justice. Just think how quickly we could "empty our jails".

LOL! I'm not the one keeping a loaded gun on my dining room table. Also, if someone is attacking me, the only person's safety I care about is my own, which would put my priorities in exactly the right place. I'm also female, so that's MRS. Selfish to you.

So we've got a woman who claims she can take on any man.

Call us someday from the Rape Treatment Center. We'll try to be sympathetic.

I have a gun within reach. My wife is very unlikely to be raped.

If you do not care about your own safety, then at least try to care about other women or the elderly. Just because you have no self-preservation instinct, do not assume that for the rest of society.

I'm already in England. You obviously haven't read anything I've ever posted.

And thank G-d for it! I could use a lot less unmitigated B.S. in my life!

I might be, but statistically speaking, I wouldn't be. I'm not afraid of a stranger breaking down my door and holding me at gunpoint.

So then the very violence, whose obsequiousness in the U.S. you protest, is not really a factor (statistically speaking of course) in your expatriation.

Judge, jury, and executioner, eh?

Please stop with the cute sound-bite comments.

Do you have a problem with what the husband did?

What should he (in your mind) have done differently?

and yes, I have been shot at before.

Oh really? Since you brought it up, do tell! Let's hear about this experience(rubber bands and spitballs don't count). I for one would like some clarification on your statement here.

"However, had someone broken into my house armed, I probably would have given him what he asked for so he'd leave."

Pretty good politically-correct statement. You'll probably get a lot of kudos from the liberal gun-grabbing weenies for taking that attitude.

"When I was grabbed on the street in America, I bit my assailant on the arm, then pinned him against the wall and broke his other arm.... After I broke his arm I punched him in the ear."

Is this the same person talking here? Didn't you passively "give him what he wanted so he'd leave"?

I think you're a fraud and a liar.

Statistically speaking, do you know what the chances are of
being shot by a lawful gunowner?

But is passivity worth the risk of rape and death to you our your spouse? I lived in Atlanta for awhile and am very familiar with the area where it took place. Stockbridge is an ok area, but it is near to some of the worst neighborhoods in the region. While I can't predict what these criminals would have done, based on what has happened in the past in south Atlanta, the risk of rape or murder was a very real possibility. Inner city Atlanta(southside) has some of the highest murder and crime rates in the US(up there with the worst areas of Detroit, LA, Newark, Miami, DC.) Which would still result in carpet stains, but ya'll's instead of the criminal's.

When it comes to crime, the east side of Austin seems like West Lake Hills when compared to south Atlanta.

I do have a tangential question: Do you sense the average British citizens holding the same level of hostility and disdain to the US as is portrayed in the British press? The same anger at Blair for standing by Bush? From what you have seen, as a whole how often does the British press accurately portray what most Britons feel or believe(on all issues, not just war and Bush)? Just curious.

Now, let me just get this straight.

On the one hand, you're saying crime is so "quite unlikely" to happen to you that any concern about that is "paranoid."

Yet at the same time, you claim to have "taken down" a man who grabbed you on the street.

Little cognitive disconnect here.

By the way, I don't buy your line about a boyfriend having taught you some really neat self defense moves. It's just not that easy. I am a lowly 5th kyu aikidosa and working my posterior off in the dojo two or three times a week. I am a small woman but very muscular and can easily bench press 75 pounds (at age 47). But almost any man in the dojo can clean my clock, I know it and they know it. It's a simple matter of biology and physics. I prefer to put my trust in the dependable products of the Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company. Mr. Sam called his revolver "the Equalizer" with good reason.

IF what you say is true -- which given my training and experience I doubt -- you had the element of surprise and you were very, very lucky indeed. I don't care to bank on luck . . . that's when it usually runs out.

No...I'm more scared of the "lawful" gun owners.

Really? And just what are you afraid lawful gun owners will do? By definition, a "lawful" gunowner will never point a gun at you, shoot at you, shoot you, rob you, rape you, and so on, so long as you don't try to commit a crime against them. A lawful gun owner, by definition, has never committed a crime with a gun.

With this statement, you also express fear of your father, who, you tell us, has a conceal-carry permit in Texas.

"Mr. Sam called his revolver "the Equalizer" with good reason."

Well-stated, AAM. I am a woman who will not wait to reason with nor try to "take down" an enraged man. My Beretta will do the job for me.

"When it comes to crime, the east side of Austin seems like West Lake Hills when compared to south Atlanta."

Thank-you for making that plain to little lass. I live "outside the perimeter" to the northeast and do not feel very safe at all. But wait....I feel "But I've lived in Atlanta and dodged bullets by catching them in my teeth" coming on as her snappy, know-it-all retort!
