A Dearth of Information About the Jesse Helms Senate Seat(My Title)

After a search on Free Republic for news about the Jesse Helms Senate Seat in North Carolina I was a little surprised at the lack of information.

If I used the wrong search terms or keywords, I would be thankful if more proficient Freepers would post links to this thread.

This should be a pretty big deal, Elizabeth Dole is known gungrabber and she appears to have buckets of out of state money funding her campaign.

At least one of her primary opponents has this to say on his website.

If possible, I would like to keep this thread limited to courteous,thoughtful and useful discussion about this campaign.

The Founding Fathers engaged in vigorous debate while constructing the Constitution, surely members of Free Republic can do the same debating a local Senate race.

Sorry that I can not vote in your beautiful state. I lived between High Point and Greensboro for about 9 years. I cast my vote for Bush 41 against the "Evil Do'er". When Viagra Dole ran for president, I did vote for him, holding my nose while knowing he was a RINO. While some things change, mostly they stay the same. The apple does not fall very fare from the tree. I do not know when your primary will happen, but we both know that power begets power. She will win. She has been anointed. Perhaps, GWB43 at least will be able to keep her in the fold. Of course, I am still wondering if GWB43 is a RINO. He is sure sending confusing messages.

I can hope that Jim Parker wins, but like they say, Mrs. Dole is the annointed.

The venerable GOP made the same mistake with her husband in '96 when they mistakenly said that he was the only one who could beat the 'toon. This after he had spent all those years helping the democRATs implement their socialistic programs.

Liddy Dole is the same way. She puts on a great show but like Shakespeare said somewhere, (she's) "..full of words and music and signifying nothing!"

I hope that we are both wrong on the outcome. But I think we both nailed it. Only topside is that N.C. Senate seat might just stay in our corner. Do not want to allow the dem's to gain one more. N.C. is probably more likely to elect her than Mr. Parker. I do not know anything about him, does N.C.? Doubtful, but LOL Mr. Parker. If the benifactor of Viagra indused spasams wins, I hope you'al in N.C. would support her. Just maybe GBW43 can bring her around, just like he did Senator Mc Cain. With out hope we have nothing. Tom

I am really hoping Parker or Synder pull the miracle and upset Dole, so Bowels will crush Parker or Synder in the general election. This would be great since they have no shot of winning.

Do you have the experience to be a United States Senator?

Yes. There are many examples of people who ran successfully for the Senate directly from the private sector. John Edwards did it here in 1998. Bill Frist, a physician from Tennessee, did it in 1994 and was re-elected in 2000 with the biggest landslide vote in Tennessee history. It takes guts, money, and a lot of work. I am willing to make these sacrifices because I believe in the causes of smaller government, lower taxes, and personal responsibility. (back to top)

What is your message to Elizabeth Dole supporters?

People who currently support Mrs. Dole may not completely understand her vulnerabilities.

It is a sure bet that if Mrs. Dole wins in the primary, Democrats will relentlessly exploit any weakness—and it may very well score a big victory in November 2002.
Her main weaknesses as I see them are: 1) She has not been a resident or taxpayer of North Carolina for over forty years, 2) She is neither an economic nor a social conservative, and 3) She either avoids discussion of, or flip-flops on, important issues.

I understand, but challenge, the decision of Washington, D.C. GOP strategists to handpick her for the Republican Senate candidacy. She is a lovely lady and she has great name recognition. But I believe party leaders intent on regaining control of the Senate have underestimated North Carolinians, who will recognize her true nature as a liberal Washington insider who has reached great heights of power in both Democrat and Republican administrations without ever being elected to public office or wavering from her liberal beliefs.

Ronald Reagan wrote: "A political party is a mechanical structure created to further a cause. The cause, not the mechanism, brings and holds the members together."

The decision of GOP leaders to back Elizabeth Dole demonstrates they are neglecting the conservative cause in favor of "star power." When you stray from the cause, you divide our party members and hand victory to our opponents.

Elizabeth Hanford (Dole) was a Democrat working in Washington, D.C., during the heyday of Lyndon B. Johnson's "Great Society" programs. She started her career working for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1965. In 1968 she landed a job inside LBJ's White House, in the Office of Consumer Affairs. When Richard Nixon took over the White House, she switched her party affiliation from Democrat to Independent. In 1975, she switched parties again. Before marrying Bob Dole, she became a Republican. She has since been a resident of Kansas until beginning her campaign to be a U.S. Senator representing North Carolina.

Dole's personal political beliefs remained a mystery to the public at large until she ran for President of the United States in 1999. Even while the liberal media praised her for being a "moderate" Republican, she convinced conservatives that her liberal stripes had not faded during the years she wore the Republican label. That is possibly the main reason she plunged from her leading position in the polls early in the presidential primary campaign and another reason she won't win in North Carolina.

Michelle Malkin of the Washington Times summarized Elizabeth Dole's Senate campaign when she wrote:

"She has no ideas, no issues and no motivating principles except the eternal preservation of her political viability. Instead, she and Republican strategists in Washington are relying on her personality, chromosomes, celebrity status and ideological squishiness to vault her to victory.

On guns, she has echoed Mrs. Clinton's call for a ban on semi-automatic firearms, restrictions on ammunition and mandatory trigger locks. Mrs. Dole sides with Sarah Brady in opposing laws allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons. On abortion, she is an artful dodger. Although she has claimed (rather briskly) on a few occasions that she is "pro-life," she repeatedly evaded questions on her position during her failed presidential bid. On affirmative action, she earned cheers from the left for championing 10 percent set-aside contracts for minorities during her tenure as Ronald Reagan's transportation secretary and for declaring a jihad against the purported "glass ceiling" for women in the corporate world while serving as the first President Bush's labor secretary... She championed a federal ban on drinking alcohol for adults up to 24 years old. And she supported one of the biggest wastes of taxpayer dollars, the federal Job Training Partnership Act. Some members of the Republican establishment argue that Mrs. Dole's star power and "moderate" makeup make her a perfect candidate at a time when the party needs every Republican it can get in its uphill battle to recapture the Senate majority. But Mrs. Dole's Beltway backers should be careful what they wish for, lest they end up with Jim Jeffords in a skirt..."

Why are you a candidate for United States Senator?

Because I love North Carolina and freely adopted it as my home state long before I dreamed of running for the Senate. My greatest treasure—my family, is invested here. We are proud to call North Carolina home. I have many ties to North Carolina, including historical: a direct ancestor was an officer in the North Carolina Militia and fought at the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War. My mother-in-law and father-in-law live in North Carolina, as do three sisters-in-law and ten nieces and nephews (in the cities of Charlotte, Havelock, and Fuquay-Varina).

My two oldest children attend public high school, while my two younger children are home-schooled. The home schooling process has taught me a lot about North Carolina history! I recently took my family to the Gettysburg Battlefield, where I learned, among other things, that North Carolina suffered more casualties during that battle (and the entire Civil War) than any other Confederate state.

My wife and I, but especially my wife, have cheerfully contributed to our little corner of North Carolina. While I have coached many youth soccer teams since we settled in Lumberton, last year it was my wife who organized something really special—"The Lumber River Run 5K Run/Walk." My company was the major corporate sponsor. The event was a great success, with hundreds of people participating in the activities. We raised thousands of dollars for Communities-in-Schools, a program to help students excel in their studies. She is planning an even larger event for 2002. (back to top)

Do we need more doctors in Congress?

Yes. We need good people from all walks of life in Congress, but especially doctors, or other professionals trained in the sciences and experienced with real world problems. Attorneys certainly have helped make this a great country, but I believe we already have enough of them in the Senate. Currently there is only one physician in the Senate, Bill Frist of Tennessee. There are 52 attorneys. As a doctor, by oath, custom, and training I am required to "First do no harm."

Applying common-sense medical and scientific reasoning to legislation would be highly beneficial. Unfortunately we pass many laws that don't fix any problems and frequently make matters worse. Few legislators have the courage or insight to say, "We made a big mistake, let's repeal that law." In the field of medicine, there are many examples of new drugs that held great promise as a cure. But when a drug creates more disease than cure it is quickly abandoned. Just like new drugs, our new laws should be monitored for their effectiveness and their bad side effects. If new laws don't help or make matters worse, they should be abandoned. (back to top)

How do you describe yourself?

Labels can be misleading. Years ago, many of my ideas would probably have been considered "Classical Liberal." What has changed, in my opinion, is the political center as defined by the media and accepted by many Democrats and Republicans. For example, consider this 1930 quote from Franklin D. Roosevelt:

"As a matter of fact and law, the governing rights of the States are all of those which have not been surrendered to the National Government by the Constitution or its amendments. Wisely or unwisely, people know that under the Eighteenth Amendment Congress has been given the right to legislate on this particular subject [Prohibition of alcoholic beverages], but this is not the case in the matter of a great number of other vital problems of government, such as the conduct of public utilities, of banks, of insurance, of business, of agriculture, of education, of social welfare and of a dozen other important features. In these, Washington must not be encouraged to interfere."

In today's political environment that quote would be considered radically “conservative”. Yet it was made by one of the champions of big-government liberalism (back to top)

Can you really win? How?

Absolutely. There are more of "us" ordinary people than "them"- zealous big government supporters. Unfortunately, we don't always make ourselves heard in the voting booth. I am heartened by the stunning defections of prominent former liberals like David Horowitz and Bernard Goldberg to a more conservative outlook. It demonstrates that "we the people” have held the correct view from the beginning. There has also been a tremendous shift in public attitudes toward personal responsibility in recent months, as more people have come to understand that ideas do have consequences and that government is not the answer to societal problems. These are the people who will help me "Just say no" to creeping Socialism and Big-Nanny government .(back to top)

How can I help your campaign?

Vote. Use your fingers and feet and heart and head and hands to vote in the primary on September 10th. You must be either Republican or unaffiliated to vote in the Republican primary. I count on people who basically share my worldview to spread the word any way they can. The power of the Internet has yet to be harnessed to its full potential.

Here are some suggestions: talk to your friends or send them email about my campaign, write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, sign up at this web site for email alerts or as a campaign volunteer. Donate. Statewide campaigns are extremely expensive and my opponents will be well funded. Our freedom will be riding on this election. Any amount you can donate would be greatly appreciated. My mistake, I should have posted the Elizabeth Dole biography from the FAQ as the lead post in this thread.

My understanding is that only a few hundred thousand people vote in the North Carolina Primary.

Certainly seems ripe for an upset regardless of the money involved.

Didn't the California Governor's race hinge on an upset by Simon?

It would seem where there is a will there is a way.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

As General Patton said "It's not your job to die for your country (philosophy), it's your job to make the other guy die for his country (philosophy).

Or words to that effect.

If Free Republic is so powerful, lets see it flex it's muscle and upset an election in some little state like North Carolina.

I'm voting Snyder in the primary.
However, I still believe he has a very slim chance of beating Dole. I think Parker has even less chance.

Not IF, but WHEN Dole wins the primary, I will definitely support her against Irksome Bowels.
