Earth Summit Winds Down[Thank G-d] in Acrimony, Powell Jeered

At a closing session in Johannesburg, speaker after speaker attacked as too weak a plan meant to tackle global problems from AIDS ( news - web sites) to depleted fish stocks. In formally agreeing the text, delegates of almost 200 nations clapped for just 10 seconds.

A separate document, the "political declaration" backing the "implementation plan," had still to be approved.

Environmentalists branded the plan a waste of time and a sellout to business interests favored by President Bush ( news - web sites), one of the few major world leaders who did not attend.

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan ( news - web sites) said expectations for the summit had been too high. Venezuela's left-wing President Hugo Chavez said the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) had turned out to be a 10-day "dialogue of the deaf."

Earlier, hecklers chanting "Shame on Bush" twice interrupted Powell as he defended U.S. policies against criticism that the world's richest country and biggest polluter does not care.

Does anyone know if this is even true? I mean aside from considerations of relative size, resulting standard of living, death and disease rates, etc, do the US actually generate more pollution than say China or India or Russia?

I don't have numbers in front of me, but I am sure that in terms of GDP/pound of pollution, the US is the cleanest industrial country on earth. That is why this whole concept of the US polluting is nuts.

When other industrial countries are as clean as th US, the rest of the world can bitch. As to non-industrial countries, they still pee in their water sources and poop on their meager crops. In addition, they produce negative GDP/pound of pollution.

If these BS dictatorships had taken the billions we have sent them and put them to the use intended, they would be free, fed, and fabulous.

In general, we feed the world as it is!
