Editor's File | A letter to Coulter
Dear Ann Coulter:
You're fired.
It's not that extreme viewpoints are unwelcome on the opinion pages of the Centre Daily Times. All political viewpoints, from Cal Thomas on the right to Molly Ivins on the left, are welcome here.
But, we don't welcome haters, Ann, and that's what you are.
Well, you are either a hater or a hypocrite who calls names and spews enmity because you believe it will get your pretty face on television more or sell more copies of your best-selling books.
In either case, we won't be publishing your Friday column anymore . We decided not to publish a piece of yours a few weeks back because it was nothing more than a sexual history of some of your enemies -- i.e., private citizens who dared to give money to the Democrats.
I wrote a column about why we held the piece and told readers then that if you continued to cross the line, we'd can you.
Your Friday column, in which you declared that liberals are "no good," then trashed the entire Kennedy clan as a collection of "heroin addicts, convicted killers, cheaters, bottleggers and dissolute drunks," crossed that line. I'm not going to defend the Kennedy family or liberals; either group can argue with you if they'd like.
But, Ann, you're mean -- vicious, really -- which is why we do not believe that you in any way serve the public good.
On a late summer morning almost a year ago, all of us -- Republicans, Democrats and everyone else -- witnessed what hate is capable of.
Since that day, Americans have tried to remember that they are on the same side, regardless of differences in skin color, nation of origin, religion or political viewpoint. It has not always been easy because, more than ever, those who are different can seem more threatening. But we're trying because what we have in America is worth keeping.
And, Ann, you're not helping. You do nothing to elevate our spirits, to celebrate the great bond that holds us this unruly people together and makes us a nation.
Hate is easy; love is hard.
Our great nation gives you the freedom to hate all you want and even to make a buck off it if you can. But, even better, it gives us the right not to have to listen.
So, Ann, you're fired. I expect some of our readers are going to be mad at us over this, but we hope they'll understand that while we joyfully publish a wide spectrum of political and social viewpoints, we condemn hate where we find it.
You won't miss us much, Ann. Heck, you're rolling in money. And your fans can find your column on the Internet anyway.
We'll start looking for someone to replace you. It won't be easy because you sure are flashy and a lot of folks like flashy. But political conservatism has produced other columnists of merit whose ideas will provide subjects fit for public consumption and debate -- writers who do not believe those who disagree with them are traitors, or worse.
Sincerely,
Bob Unger, executive editor

Excellent!
(And know what? Pssssst.... Threads like this about Ann expose the Democrat scumbags who come over to Free Republic incognito to cause mischief, but upon reading samples of Ann's work silently go ballistic. You can pick them out real easy - - they're the ones who soft-pedal about not really liking Ann too much, she's a little too abrasive, etc. Reading the sordid truth about their party and themselves is too much for them to take, lol.)
OHHHH PAAAHLEEEEAZZZE...
Let's round up Carville, McAuliffe and Donahue to join hands with us and sign Kumbahya. Then we'll count the bloody stumps we pull back.
I do agree with Sean. Most of my liberal friends are just like me...they want the same things that I do. Life, Liberty and to be Happy.
They care about the same things that I do too. The economy, education for their kids and the price of gas.
As far as I'm concerned, the differnce between them and me is where we get our news, and how much of it we get. For them, 15 minutes of Danny Blather on the evening news is enough, for me Limbaugh, Hannity, and a couple of dozen internet sites everyday isn't enough.
As far as Coulter is concerned, yeah she uses invictive...but it's about freakin' time we had somebody with the coconuts to be on the offensive.
Unger wants nice, then hire Lott or Dole (or maybe even Rodney King) to fill the slot left open by Ann...
For me, I'll track down Coulter for her articles even if she winds up on the pages of PennySaver or The Auto Trader.
Would'nt it be nice for Ann to step forward and lead a conservative movement in this country???? When Hag Hillary runs for prez, have Ann run on a third party ticket, if the pubs dont want her.
On a late summer morning almost a year ago, all of us -- Republicans, Democrats and everyone else -- witnessed what hate is capable of.
Wait... one... minute.
Is this effette little clod truly saying this? Is he comparing insulting the Kennedies in a rude manner to hijacking passenger jets and levelling the World Trade Center?
Imagine someone firing a political writer after the Hindenburg crashed in flames:
"You, sir, are not careful. And we witnessed one day not long ago on a New Jersey field what carelessness is capable of."
Or perhaps an employer firing Robert Oppenheimer after Hiroshima:
"You, sir, are into all that atomic stuff. And we recently witnessed what that is capable of."
Why is it that new media outlets can't simply say what they really mean:
"Ann is not our style. She's combative and mean (both are undeniably true). We prefer a calmer style that provokes a bit less outrage on a daily basis. It makes us uncomfortable."
But NOOOOO. They have to make themselves into some sort of freaking saints for dropping the evil Ann. Give me a break!
Coulter's observations about the Kennedys were absolutely spot-on. However, in some parts of the world, Camelot is still worshipped. Ann paid a price for that.
A lot of folks on this board are upset with Coulter's use of invective. Well, it is about time that someone went out and kicked the liberals right in the balls!
You folks who disdain Coulter do not understand her role as a provacateur. She has readily admitted in the past that she uses invective to bait the liberals. We have need for someone the liberals absolutely hate. After all, the liberals have Paul Begala, Ted Rall, Carville, and Molly Ivins, among other members of the extreme left, who are given a full and free airing to attack conservatives for being mean-spirited and hateful, while all the time accusing Republicans of being racist and bigoted.
It's time someone went out and kicked the liberals in the teeth. Ann does that for us, and she's damned good at it.
Personally, I'm glad that Coulter writes the way she writes and does what she does. She kicks ass, and it's about damned time, too.
Unless, of course, you enjoy watching Tucker Carlson do his girly-man routine opposite Paul Begala. I don't.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
I think this is absolutely untrue. It may be what people say in response to polls, but lets look at what they actually do.
Those Independents had to be the ones responsible for Clinton's sky high polls during impeachment. Who was negative and vicious? It wasn't Ken Starr, it wasn't Republicans. How many people, besides us, were really outraged by the James Byrd ads?
I think what people really mean when they answer this way is that they are tired of the lack of real substance in political debate. Look back to the Contract With America. There were goals, issues were explained. The same with the "third rail" of politics, social security. Pundits claimed that Bush would be creamed if he took that on, but he did and it was well received.
That cow is still around?
Also, Is she still doing crack?
The truth is a terrible thing when you are on the wrong side of the mirror.
