Bush's appearance, closed to the public, was at the Carpenters Joint Apprentice and Training Center on Neville Island. After a quck tour of the facility Bush spoke for about 25 minutes to about 1,000 supporters.
He addressed issues ranging from homeland security, to federal terrorism insurance, to prescription drug subsidies for the elderly to education.
In addition to pushing his policies, he heaped praise on American workers.
The President said the federal tax cut should be permanent. "You need to have more money as far as I'm concerned," Bush said, receiving a cheer from the crowd.
Bush told the union workers that the reluctance of private insurers to underwrite potential terrorist targets has delayed $8 billion worth of projects and 300,000 jobs. He got another loud cheer when he said a terrorism insurance bill "has got to be good for hard hats, not lawyers."
After addressing what the federal government could do for the country, he asked Americans to pitch in.
"The goal is more than a safer country, it's a better place for us all," Bush said.
The President urged Americans to volunteer more, for example by visiting shut-ins, and recognized Hill District grandmother Doris Harris for her volunteer work with the elderly.
The President was in the city about 2 hours after Air Force one touched down at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport at about 1:35 p.m.

Write up of W's visit to Pittsburgh today. I could have went, but did not want to be around all those union guys. Too many fights with them in the past.

Note the silly safety goggles the Prez is wearing while he appears to be weilding a dangerous, ummm... screwdriver. God, the things public officials have to put up with in order to be "role models."

Safety goggles are sop on many jobs and that's ... umm ... a steel shanked framing hammer. Everything standard.
Watarya' ... a blue-dog?

Goggles are often a workplace requirement, irregardless of real need. I read that he was also operating a saw during the visit, which would also require goggles.

They did a Goggle search.

They must be a bunch of Yahoo's.

He has a hammer in his hand. The head is behind the wood frame he is kneeling beside. He has the right equipment.
Dont forget, our President is a REAL MAN!!

I admire Doris Harris for living in the Hill District. One of the first things I learned when I moved here was that every newsreader had to learn the words "Hill District man" right away.

I'm just glad we no longer have to see photos of Clinton and Gore, wearing work shirts that still have creases in them from having just come out of the package, both of them trying to drive nails with the wrong side of the hammer head.

OK, it's a hammer (not a screwdriver) Dubya was wielding (not weilding [to correct my spelling error]). I was not being critical of the President, but rather of our nanny-like culture which insists that even in PR shots, goggles must be worn when holding a hammer, helmets must be worn when standing next to a bicycle, etc. Years ago, I seem to recall that the comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead was criticised for mowing his grass without wearing goggles. Might be a bad influence on young readers, don't ya know. A sign of the times, I guess.
