[history]
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon has begun making an issue of Gov. Gray Davis' fund-raising tactics even as a statewide poll shows voters think the governor would do a better job of maintaining high ethical standards in government.
But if Simon's more aggressive line of rhetoric -- that Davis caters to those who give him campaign contributions -- is bringing faint hope to some GOP leaders, they also admit they are suffering from waning optimism that the Republican nominee has a chance to win the governorship.

"Eighty percent of the people who will vote for Gov. Davis are going to do so with one hand on their nose," So why would they vote for the crook?

As an amateur political scientist Democrats would vote for the crook because of social and cultural reasons because Gray Davis protects their beliefs from conservatives. If the Green Party nominee had more money or if Riordan was the Republican nominee we would see a mass defection from Democrats and Independents from across the state.

If everyone thinks Davis is a corrupt official, why should anyone believe his campaign commercials? I find it especially galling to read the obvious smears in the news media. Of course, the media do get a piece of the action, and Davis does have a bigger pie to split up...
On the other hand, if you accept the state's slide into fascism as inexorable, then I guess you better vote the right way and remember to contribute, because if Davis wins and you were not behind him, you'll be under his wheels.

Simon must be winning to inspire so many attack articles in the RAT lapdog media.

And some are speculating, publicly and privately, whether Simon will drag down the rest of the Republican statewide ticket.
What statewide Republican ticket?
"Eighty percent of the people who will vote for Gov. Davis are going to do so with one hand on their nose..."
That's why I think Simon should run with the tag line that he started in the last ad "This whole thing just stinks."

and a poll last week by the Public Policy Institute of California showing the governor ahead by a 41-30 percent margin. I find it really hard to believe that in California, with all the national media attention, that 29% are not even strongly leaning towards a candidate for the highest office in the state.

The media may be liberal, but all the negative quotes in the article are coming from GOP leaders. If the Republican Party in California would pull together and show a united monolithic block of support for Simon these articles wouldn't have any credence.

Most people in this state are ignorant, apathetic and do not vote unless a labor organizer fills out their absentee ballot.

Same reason many people will vote for Simon -- lesser of two evils. Both GOP and Dems reap many voters "holding their noses."

If the Republican Party in California stopped trying to be Democrats "lite", then ...

"So why would they vote for the crook?"
Rather that than vote for Simple Simon - forget California and its 50+ electorial votes -
"Lions 42 - Christians 0" - been that way around the old Coliseum for a long time.

So you buy what the Media has said about Simon?
To: Ernest_at_the_Beach
GOP pols worry Simon's bad vibes may be infectious You would think that Davis would have really bad vibes. Why aren't Davis's bad vibes infectious?
Wait. I said "you would think". Just answered my own question.
This is frustrating!

There's nothing fishy about Bray Davis; we know where he stands.

Right, but remember that the media goes fishing for these quotes. They can pick and choose what gets into the article, so even if most of what they hear is positive or neutral, the minority negative quotes will still be printed.

Most people in this state are ignorant, apathetic and do not vote unless a labor organizer fills out their absentee ballot. Au contraire! Illegal immigrants vote early and vote often!

Right. Given the choice between a dimocrat and a RINO, I take neither.

"Simon must be winning to prompt so many attack ads"
You got it!! Remember the liberals speak in "projection-eze" which means when they say Simon is losing, what they really mean is THEY are losing support from their base.
