Fox fishes for reality in "Green Acres"

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Days after news broke that CBS was planning a reality-series revival of "The Beverly Hillbillies," Fox Broadcasting said it is developing a nonfiction comedy that mirrors another hickfest: "Green Acres."

While details are still being hammered out, the show will take a rich, upper-class family or individual -- possibly a celebrity -- and move them from a big city to a much more spartan existence, most likely in the South. Cameras will observe as the former socialites, deprived of access to their bank accounts and Beemers, attempt to get a job, buy groceries and fit in with average Americans.

The series has been in the works for several weeks and precedes the revelation of CBS' tentatively titled "The real Beverly Hillbillies," which will drop a lower-middle-class family into a Beverly Hills mansion in hopes of much mirth.

"I see a limo with a U-Haul attached," said "Green Acres" executive producer Jon Murray. "There's going to be wonderful humor in this show, as there is with anyone who's a fish out of water. It's like when the first George Bush went to the supermarket and (apparently) didn't understand what a scanner was. It's a fun thing to watch."

His Bunim-Murray Prods., which makes MTV's "The Real World," will develop the "Green Acres" revival with producer 20th Century Fox TV.

Neither Fox nor Bunim-Murray owns the rights to the "Green Acres" name. The rights holders of the title are represented by the Endeavor Agency, and while there's industry buzz that Fox has made inquiries into using the title, no deals have been made.

Indeed, depending on how the project shapes up over the next few weeks, it's possible Fox executives won't even want to use the name "Green Acres," fearing it could alienate more viewers than it would attract.

Except for the fish-out-of-water idea, "Our final concept may end up being real different (than 'Green Acres')," said Mary-Ellis Bunim, Murray's partner in Bunim-Murray.

At the same time, the realities of network marketing could make the idea of using the pre-sold "Green Acres" irresistible to Fox. Executives at the network declined comment.

A key decision for the parties behind the Fox series will be whether to use a celeb family, a la "The Osbournes," or go with ordinary rich folks.

"If we go the celeb route, we get some added excitement," Murray said. "But we're going to look at both ideas. It will all come together, and we'll know the right direction."

First they tell us they're doing this to "Beverly Hillbillies", now this.

There is no God.

I thought it was Clinton who was amazed by the scanner, or was that a ATM machine he didn't know how to use?

You know what would be great - take Ted Kennedy or Hillary and move them to a nice rural setting, say Elohim City or somewhere in northern Idaho.

The networks need to take a lesson from PBS when it comes to reality shows. What was the name of it -- Frontier House? That was good reality TV.

That would be better. Once Ted and Hillary gave up their PC act they would fit right in the places I mentioned.

The Bush scanner story is an urban legend. He was examining a new type of scanner at a convention that had not been released yet. It could scan around corners, and Bush remarked he'd never seen that. Which was logical, since that was a prototype.

Second, if you took everyone's money and possessions away, eventually, most of the people that made it on their own would wind up back at the top.

What gets me is, not just the desecration of so many wonderful classic tv series, but how the tv networks are constantly ripping each other off. It used to be tv talk shows. Now we're getting flooded with "reality" tv series.

TV Exec: "Hey, I got an idea! Let's rip off their idea and cash in on it!"

Havent they got an original idea between all of them?

Thank God for cable tv so that one can watch the real classics.

Anybody see the Max Baer interview on FOX News last night? He suggested doing this. He's also made a fortune on Beverly Hillbillies spinoffs.

He said "Maybe Jethro wasn't so dumb after all."

Hey hey hey HEY HEY! You got sumptin' against Northern Idaho?

Those of us who live in small towns and rural areas find this kind of condescension infuriating. This is one principal reason for the blue/red nation dichotomy ("oh, listen, dear, the hick used a big word, isn't that cute?") and one reason a lot of city boys find out the hard way not to pee on a eee-lectric fence...

I have a reality show idea...

Have our congressmen/women live under the laws they create.

Wouldn't that be a hoot!

As if the south were somehow devoid of wealthy, obnoxious socialites. Yeah, right.

Take it easy, I was making a reference to a very specific location in northern Idaho, long known as a hang out for various neo-nazi groups. Take a look at my profile page, and you'll see that I'm not exactly the condescending, big city type.

No, no, I didn't mean you (as far as the condescension) - I meant the producers. We've both been around long enough to know where the other's coming from...

What a meant was that inflicting Hillary (ptui!) on NI...that's a hangin' offense...
