GALESBURG - The Galesburg City Council on Monday passed a ban on indoor furniture being used outdoors.
An ordinance to restrict the use of upholstered furniture on patios, balconies and front porches passed 7-1 with no discussion. First Ward Alderman Mike Spah cast the sole vote against the ordinance. After the meeting, Spah said he would have voted for the ordinance if he thought it would make any inroads at getting citizens to clean up their yards and their porches. The ordinance goes into effect as soon as written notice is published.
The ordinance is intended to keep sofas off porches and balconies, where they can become wet and unsightly.

This is gross discrimination against poor white trash.

It's a typical violation of property rights.

Somebody needs to address all those Chevys jacked up in people's yards.

Is the reverse true? Is outdoor furniture banned from my living room? If it is, I'm in violation of the law.

This is a common ordinance in college towns to get beer drinkers off the lawns. In East Lansing during the 1999 student riots, couches were put in the middle of the street and torched.
As a permamnent resident in a college town I like the law. It took riots to get the liberals on the city council to do anything.

Just be careful with that barbeque grill in your living room.

I believe Santa Cruz outlaws sofas and other plush furnishing on the porch. Too many prank fires and crashed out home bums I reckon.
I have been expecting to see this as a trend and have wondered if Eugene, Oregon will eventually follow suit in that porch invasions have long been a huge problem here.

I agree that it is lousy, prissy, priggish rule. But communities can pass such rules. I only hope they don't.
