With President Bush away for a month, a noisy horde of sweaty construction workers and heavy machinery has descended to give the executive mansion a facelift -- about 270 projects ranging from replacing the odd door knob to ripping up and repaving an entire driveway.

Yes, I'm sure you're right. It really is a beautiful house and it will be great to see it all spruced up, sparkling fresh and welcoming once again.

FOFLOL. I imagine we'd all sound like we, "just fell off the turnip truck" too if we lived as near the "Western White House" as you. It has to be noisy but exciting at the same time. :)

I think the answer to that question is: Civil Service employee. You know, like the status Daschle and Gephardt want all airport security workers to have ?

In this case, stupid and/or with poor vision.

Thanks for the pings. Great article.

The first time I read the paragraph about the wood parquet floor, I could have sworn that the stain had been applied during X42's reign -- because it had been applied "against the grain." Everything that happened during those eight long years, in my opinion, was against the grain. Kind of like fingernails across the blackboard for me.

...What a refreshing and welcome change. ...An understatement. But,,,Though I do agree with yer, how ever demonic the occupant, the symbol of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue will endure and endear.

FOFLOL. Right. I think he's pretty good at running "from" things too like lamps, husbands, subpoenas....

Thanks for the ping.

I find this article interesting.

Of course, the White House has to be kept in tip top shape, and that is expensive but worth it.

At least we can be proud of the occupants now, who are people who understand the significance of the White House and respect it.

By the way, it really ticks me off that the television show is titled The West Wing. Although I have never seen it, I know what it's like and when I see the words, "west wing," I involuntarily cringe thinking of the show.

It's sorta like some of the people involuntarily cringe when they think of the use the Clinton jogging track was put to, or not.

Yes, Thank God, it will and if we ever doubted that all we have to do is look back on the previous administration.

Yes, upkeep on an average house is continuous I can just imagine the scope of one the size of The White House. I'm grateful we have a First Family who appreciates the historical integrity of the house and one who will leave it in far better shape than it was when they arrived.

I understand how you feel about the show West Wing. I've never watched it either. I didn't need to, I knew if Martin Sheen had anything to do with a "politically oriented" production I wouldn't like it.

I had JUST settled back from a medium-rare rather thick steak, red wine, and a cigar, and you HAD to put this ____ picture up for all to see.

George and I realize what an occasional fine cigar is for.

x42 has it all wrong...and come to think of it, has never had ANYTHING right.

Very interesting behind-the-scenes story of what it takes to keep "our house" looking great. And such a laugh to recall the newsies harping about President Bush not taking his job seriously because he's spending the month in Texas. Shouldn't he be in the White House dodging the workers and the heavy equipment...hmmmmm? NOT giving statements from the first tee, heaven forfend!!!

It's an almost daily treat to watch the press consume itself with its nonsensical sophomorishness. And a REAL daily treat to watch this administration in action.
