A light but steady flow of voters was reported at several metro Atlanta polling places during the early stages of today's primary election, and at least one precinct was briefly shut down because of confusion over redistricting.

Voters have faced massive precinct shifts as a result of this year's once-a-decade redrawing of political district maps.

Confusion over the redistricting prompted the precinct at Margaret Harris High School, off North Druid Hills Road in DeKalb County, to suspend voting for about 20 minutes shortly after opening today, said poll manager Maria Arvelo.

Arvelo said the precinct had recently been moved from the 4th Congressional District to the 5th District, but after several voters came in thinking they were still in the 4th District, "we had to shut the precinct down until we got clarification on it."

"People were confused because there are signs along North Druid Hills saying Cynthia McKinney and Denise Majette, and people were like, 'Well, I wasn't notified [of the change],' " Arvelo said. "But they were notified because their voter's registration says District 5."

She said the precinct would remain open an extra 20 minutes -- until 7:20 p.m. -- to make up for the time it closed this morning.

At the Briarwood Recreation Center in DeKalb, about 10 people were waiting when the polls opened at 7 a.m.

Most of those voting during the first 15 minutes were casting ballots in the Democratic primary, said Dottie Cadenhead, the poll manager.

The only early problem was one voter -- the first person in one in line -- who was at the wrong precinct, Cadenhead said.

"He was disappointed, but I think he'll make his way over to another precinct," she said.

At DeKalb's Medlock Elementary School, 60 people had either already voted or were waiting in line to vote at 7:30 a.m.

In northwest Atlanta, Bill Dennis, poll manager at Morris Brandon Elementary School precinct, said the line upon opening was "about average" for a primary, with about 10 people queued.

Dennis said that fewer than 20 people voted during the first 30 minutes. The turnout was even lighter elsewhere.

I am in the 4th (McKinney) and voted in the democrat primary this morning at Chestnut elementary.

I was the 175th voter at 9:00 am. This was my first time voting in this district, but the workers were exclaiming that this was a VERY high turnout.

I was one of approximatley 12 voters in the room.

There was only one voter on the GOP side.

I am sure that some of them were faithful to McKinney, but truly believe that most were crossovers from the GOP.

As you know, most of the am voters are traditionally democrats, while the pm voters are GOPers. That is because most Atlantans (that work) are at work before the polls open, due to traffic woes.

If we hear idications that Majette is doing well, it'll be good news, as they still will not have counted the pm vote.

Yours truely went to vote this AM.
Now I vote in fulton co. at a retirement home just south of
I-20, as I entered the parking lot of this poll there were numerous campaigners sitting in chairs and holding signs.

After I voted I mentioned this to the poll officials ,one told me that she didn't think they were too close but said
she had a rope 150 feet long that she used to measure and would I like her to check. I said yes and got in my
car,and
watched while she dragged out her string.
Now the warning signs say, No campaigning within 150 feet of
the corner of any building used as a polling place.
She dragged her string out as far as the campaigners and looked at me like ok, now I've done it, I just kept sitting
in my truck and watching, when she realized I wasn't going
she realized that there was a big snarl of rope (about 50 feet) in the middle of her string, so she straightend that
out, and again went out as far as the campaigners, AND DIRECTED HER ASSISTANT TO TAKE THE END
OF THE STRING BACK
ALONG SIDE OF THE BUILDING! I kept sitting there watching and she finally shook her head and made them
move. I would be willing to bet they are still there now.

It's obviously the fault of the U.S. Supreme Court, and police officers hellbent on disenfranchising minority voters.

...the Dems have a phone message warning Republicans not to vote as a Denocrat "without proper documentation."

They are playing with the words. You do need proper documentation to vote.

That would be some form of identification, and it would be required of someone voting from either party.

Lets hope the folks in Georgia are smart enought to see through the smoke screen.

Why would a Republican want to vote for a certain Democrat?

There is no way that a Republican will beat Cynthia McKinney in the General Election; therefore, the strategy is to get Republicans to "crossover" and vote for McKinney's opponent (Denise Majette) in the Democratic Primary election. That is our only hope and hold on because it just might work!

Primary News at Noon(ish) - Bill Shipp at insideradvantage.com reports, "Early information indicates that turnout in the McKinney-Majette 4th District congressional race, and in the Linder-Barr 7th District race, may by a wide margin surpass the secretary of state’s predicted statewide estimate of 22 percent of registered voters."





In addition, the noon news on WSB-TV had a very interesting report from Bill Nigut, covering a precinct in North Dekalb that is usually an even split between Democratic and Republican voters. Today, as of noon in that precinct, they'd had 370 requests for Democratic ballots, and 17 requests for Republican ballots. That shift from 50-50 to 95-5 indicates a massive Republican crossover vote ... against McKinney.



It also indicates the scare tactic of the phone recording warning Republicans they would be breaking the law by voting in the Democratic primary "without proper documentation" did not work. However, it has certainly gotten attention, as WSB and 11Alive both report the Georgia Secretary of State is launching an investigation into who is responsible for the calls, and noted that voter intimidation is a felony. Bill Shipp adds, "IA has learned that the U.S. Justice Department may be looking into the matter."



Both TV stations had footage of the two candidates casting their votes this morning ... with punch cards. One reporter tried to ask McKinney if her campaign was responsible for the calls stating Republicans could not cross over. McKinney, possibly simply ignoring the question, said "Let the campaign begin," got in her car, and was driven away.



11Alive made a point of re-running the footage where Billy McKinney responds to a question about his daughter's "fudging" of Andrew Young's endorsement: "That ain't nothin'. Jews have bought everybody. Jews. J-E-W-S."



And rumor has it that Al Sharpton is in town. No report on an endorsement yet.

Respectfully, I gotta disagree......expect for the mental health of the 40,000 or so unhappy Republicans whom she rpresents in the district...McKinney IN Congress is a bigger embarassment tothe Dems, and thus worth more to the GOP, like maybe in a close Senate race this fall in Ga....give me ONE instance that Majetter will vote different than McKInney...she'll vote straight Black Caucus ..
