Angry Truck Stop Manager Turns Away Police, Safety Inspectors
  Email story to a friend

Date: August 16, 2002 Source: Janet Blair / KRQE News 13 Location: Albuquerque, N.M.

A community anti-auto theft team was ready to go to work Thursday morning. But an angry truck stop manager put the brakes on their plan, turning away the group of local and federal inspectors.

The team were going to check the truck paperwork and do a quick safety inspection. Inspectors say because I-40 is a pipeline across the country, they were hoping to find stolen vehicles, drugs and other property they know is moving across country right through the Duke City.

"We're checking for bad VIN numbers, VIN switches, cab switches, trailer switches, bad trailers, stolen trailers, anything with bad VIN numbers or vin numbers that have been removed," said Officer Danny Langoria of the APD Auto Theft Unit.

They had just gotten started when it was all over.

Langoria was interrupted by the manager of the Flying J Truck Stop at Avalon and 98th St. on Albuquerque's West Side.

"You need to leave the property, you have no permission to be on private property," yelled the truck stop manager, who refused to be identified.

Police say most business owners appreciate a police presence on the premises, but not the Flying J Truck Stop. Police say they had called the truck to and had received approval to do the inspections.

"Apparently there was some misunderstanding about what we were doing. but I know he has business he has to protect," said Officer Langoria

Some truckers at the Flying J were also angered by the surprise inspections which they said took valuable time out of their driving day.

"It's incredible. I have never even heard of them doing that, anywhere in the United States. and I drive in all 48 states, all the time," said owner-operator William Senn of Arizona.

Unhappy truckers told KRQE News 13 they planned to use their CB radios to tell other truckers on the road not to stop in Albuquerque.

"I support and co-operate reasonable law enforcement. And, I would support and co-operate with these reasonable efforts."

But do you ENFORCE THE BILL OF RIGHTS????

Cops decide to raid local retirement home searching for terrorists. Less chance of opposition.

Don't know about that.

Some of us old codgers (some people call us old f@rts) are pretty stubborn. And they sure don't want to take on any 80 year old grandmas. They're MEAN.

<< "Cops leave and regroup at nearest Krispy Kreme to discuss."

My favorite "cops" story is the one in which a division of brave Denver and JeffCo people, every one of its members, although wearing 300 pounds or so of body armour over his police and/or sheriff's costume, more concerned for his own safety than for the children being murdered a few feet away, waits outside a school until a couple of pubescent homicidal ritalin freaks finishes the mass-murder suicide of 15 or so of their school mates.

Now THAT is a police story that ranks right up there in the annuls with the riveting details of the investigation into the Vince Foster Arkancide and the cold blooded slaughter of Vicki Weaver and her little boy Sammy.

"But do you ENFORCE THE BILL OF RIGHTS????"

Do you mean, do I "support" the Bill of Right? Yes. And, I don't thinks asking to see a vin number is an imposition upon my Forth Amendment rights; especially when requested in an area know for vehicle thefts and could reduce the risk of my vehicle being stolen.

As to that manager - Me thinks he protests too much.

Actually I used it because the term "jackbooted thugs" was no longer chic. Lighten up. I was referring to the stormtroopers. They are obviously not going to acknowledge any rights. Thus the phrase. I shall revert back to the more familiar term if you would like.

"Do you mean, do I "support" the Bill of Right? "

Nope, meant ENFORCE the rights.

How do you defining "enforce" in the context of your question?

If you are asking if I am in law enforcement, the answer is "no".

In California they have mandatory truck weight stations on all Freeways.

Are they open though? A majority of the ones up here in Washington are always closed.

That is the point. No trucker ever knows which station will be operating, so they have to keep clean everywhere. The State can afford to build far more than it can afford to keep manned.

'Uncooperative! I guess that is one way of saying that he fled from the traffic stop, which is a felony. When he was pursued, and stopped again, he was witnessed pulling a weapon. He then fled again, and when he was stopped the last time, he left the car firing his weapon, killing a local cop, leaving a widow and children. I guess that you can call this uncooperative! Wonder why you left this part out?

Seems to me that the situation warrented a call for a "BACKUP" not a go it alone traffic stop.

Apologies. I've been swimming through seven days of confusticating FreepPiranha Feeding Frenzy over on the Massillon Threads. I may be more tightly coiled than usual.

Best regards,

I imagine that, when the owner suddenly finds his taxes increasing, or even finds that vandalism on the site is increasing, he might be persuaded to make a public spectacle of the 'unreasonable' behavior of the manager.

Stay tuned.

Curiously, people read my posts whether I want them to or not.

Perhaps when I master the necessary arcane HTML codes involved I will pick a style more to your taste.

In the meantime, please accept my apologies for any shortcomings on my part.

Hey...we visit that particular Flying J often just to eat at their buffet. The all-you-can-eat price for kids used to be $.10 for each year old a child was...so our 9 year old ate for 90 cents, the 7 year old, 70 cents, and our 5 year old, 50 cents.

I think they were losing money using that idea, but despite slightly higher prices, we still are there often.

Right you are. Plenty of drivers plan their route taking into account the hours these weigh stations are in operation. And then adjust accordingly.

thanks b-4, i spend about a thousand dollars a week at Flying J, makes me feel better to know that at least some of their people understand that there is a 4th and 8th amendment. when i'm off duty or on private property i don't expect to have everything up to the minute. even if my registration is in order do you think they'd miss a chance to write a $3-400.00 logbook ticket 'cause I decided to go to sleep before i caught it up? being behind on a change of duty statis ticket starts at $400. and goes up from there...

screw those cops they've got a million miles of public highways to do their jobs leave my santuarys alone...
