The Diving Catch

It's the bottom of the ninth inning, two outs, the Giants are leading by two. The Dodgers are at bat with bases loaded, Shawn Green in the batter's box. Thus far, he's fouled two away and has not had a hit yet this game. He's hungry! The pitch is thrown, a fastball right in the middle of the strike zone. Almost as if choreographed, he swings perfectly, connecting towards the end of the bat. Barry Bonds has been waiting out there in left field for this very moment. He somehow knew, with the men on base, with Shawn's drought thus far in the game, and with the two fouls just left of the left field foul line, he'd be given this sort of game deciding challenge.  The ball ever so slightly rolls off the end of the bat as Shawn follows through on his swing and heads in a high arc out to left field.  Barry has positioned himself seemingly perfectly, in fact, so perfectly that a few fans are getting up to head home. At the last minute, however, an intense  gust of wind catches the now falling ball and moves it off course by about 10 feet. Barry knows there is only one way to respond to this. Throwing all care and self protection aside, Barry lunges horizontally with as much force as he can muster, launching himself into a dive, with arms outstretched ahead of him, towards where the ball will now fall. As the back of his mitt just starts to slide along the surface of the field, the ball strikes just inside the outer edge of the webbing. With a perfection that tells all of the greatness that begets such high pay, Barry closes the mitt, the ball is trapped and the 3rd out made. In baseball, a diving catch, while a daunting and risky physical challenge, is an obvious tactic that sees everyday usage. Does this also apply to geopolitics?

Imagine the following scenario.

For a couple of years now, a grass roots effort has been hard at work, attempting to awaken both the masses and the decision makers to a combination of forces that stand to present the USA with our ultimate challenge thus far.  The combination includes a growing Axis of nations aligning for conflict against The West, a unilaterally disarming USA, and, a subversive element who are being guided by the Axis. At long last, the grass roots activists have made a connection with the President as well as a growing minority of members of Congress. Attempts have been made to introduce initiatives to reverse the long military decline and to start preparing for the inevitable (at least to those who are aware of geopolitical reality) great powers conflict. Still, there has been no forward progress.

Congress, as a whole, are unable to either comprehend, or accept the growing threat. Between the (Social) Democrat Congressional "landslide" of the ill fated elections of 2002, the half of the GOP who have sold out to their anti-nationalistic, globalist corporate contributors, and, the general bad feelings nationwide due to the vast violence and vote fraud in 2002, Congress lacks both the Conservative numbers and intestinal fortitude to deal with issues of national security in any meaningful fashion. Instead, they have voted in things such as slavery reparations to African Americans, a national health care plan, very narrow interpretations of the 2nd Amendment effectively banning most guns, a carbon tax, and, huge additions to National Monuments that have effectively shut down the domestic mining and oil industries. The President and allied faction of Congress are getting very worried that their options to deal with a worsening geopolitical scene are nearly gone.

Seemingly as if by an unseen hand, something very unusual occurs. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff requests a Sunday evening official meeting with the President, the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State. The General has both dire news and a corresponding action plan to share with the utmost urgency. At the meeting, the General shares the latest intelligence figures for the Far East, the Middle East and Southeastern Europe. The picture that is painted is unmistakable - the Trans-Asian-Axis, comprised of Russia, China, and, a host of other nations, are massing troops and tactical nuclear weapons along 5 major fronts. There has also been unusual activity at ICBM bases throughout Eurasia coming on the heels of a slew of underground nuclear tests. The first strike that has long been feared by some, looks to be coming to fruition.

Unfortunately, given the current political situation, there is little that the President and this small group of like minded folks feel that they can do outright. The leftist Congress will certainly not move forward any legislation to increase the defense budget and, needless to say,  declaring war is not an option. Furthermore, unbeknownst to even the advisors in the room, the President has done something unprecedented - a special force made up of the best CIA and FBI agents has been spying on Congress and on the management of the vast layers of government bureaucracy. What the force has found is not encouraging - the entire Federal Government has been heavily infiltrated by Communists, Axis agents and their domestic dupes. There is essentially no "Constitutionally precedented" way to "do the right thing".

The General is about to change all that. As he unfolds the details of his proposal to the President, there is a mixture of both fear and relief in the room. There is to be a coup d'etat, sponsored by the President and the Congressional "hawk" faction. There is, however, one big caveat - the entire purpose of this action will be to both respond to the winds of war, and, to recalibrate the entire Federal Government to be more in line with the U.S. Constitution and other Founding Documents.

One week later, the American public, as well as most of the Federal Government, and, naturally, the World, are taken by surprise. In a previously unscheduled address, the President declares martial law and issues two Executive Orders. The first, rescinds all previously existing Executive Orders. The second, declares a state of war against the Axis. Concurrent with all of this, National Guard units have been positioned strategically in the coastal urban areas as well as a few selected urban areas in the interior. Very telling is the fact that no units are to be seen in any rural areas and in many cities in the interior - for example, there are none in Phoenix, none in Cheyenne, none in Huntsville, and, even, none in Orange County California! Another strange twist is that the media are untouched and allowed to continue broadcasting all points of view. It is relatively moot since the vast popularity of Conservative media has continued to grow unabated and ratings for leftist shows have collapsed.

All across the heartland of America, spontaneous celebrations break out. Even though it is only May, parades that would normally be seen on the 4th of July are held. Enlistment in the Armed Forces shoots through the roof, particularly the into the National Guard. Religious symbols are restored where they had been torn out of the Public Commons only a few short years ago. And, most importantly, a peace time mobilization that shadows even the largest ones seen during World War Two positions the US Armed Forces to confront the Axis before the Axis can make their first move. Tactical nuclear weapons and antimissile systems are forward deployed. Strategic bombers are put back on alert. Two previously planned ICBM systems, one mobile and one small, are rapidly completed. A wave of naval ship building sets new production records for both surface ships and submarines. A Civil Defense program larger than any ever done before on the planet is moved into high gear as is the Strategic Defense Initiative. Concurrently, diplomats fan out to Beijing, Moscow, Karachi, Havana and other Axis capitols with a message that will not be subject to interpretation or media spin - "we know what you are planning and we will stop you at any cost".

Over the following year, a sweep of proportions unprecedented in human history nets thousands of traitors, and millions of lesser accomplices. The worst offenders are tried, and those found guilty are executed by the Federal Prison System. The remaining traitors are sentenced to their choice of life in prison, or, to surrender their passports and be deported to the Axis countries, where they will face almost certain severe punishment for their failure. Knowing conspirators receive heavy fines and prison time. Unknowing ones are conscripted into the US Armed Forces to be shipped out after an especially grueling boot camp to help carry out the "roll back" operations now going on in 10 different locations world wide.

Three years and 6 months after the fateful meeting in the White House on that Sunday evening, a reinvigorated, patriotic and, much wiser, USA holds elections, only two years "late". There are now four major political parties and at least 10 minor ones, all of whom are represented in Congress. Due to the unique circumstances, although technically eligible to run for reelection, the President has stepped down and a new candidate has been offered up. The new candidate, a previously little known activist from the group who are now credited for saving the USA from nearly certain destruction, wins in a landslide unlike any ever seen before in the USA.

A diving catch has been made.

There has been much heated discussion on this forum regarding the Office of Homeland Security, the Patriot Act and other things that have been done since 9/11. This was published a few weeks before that fateful date and addresses an extreme scenario that may well answer some questions while raising a number of others. At the end of the day, we must do what is right in order to preserve the USA as a Free Republic for future generations, particularly in the face of enemies who despise us, our way of life and our core principles. Who knows exactly what are the limits of "process deviation" that might be required in order to accomplish this? Something to ponder...

Their first mistake was including the Secretary of State in the planning.

Sounds plausible. It will draw the flamers, and then the "moths" that love to add empty pathetic remarks to flames wars. I thought that I would offer "kudos" for a well thought out post before the "victim contingent" arrived.

Well Done

I fear that if a Democrat is elected in President 2004 or 2008, a similar scenario might take place with conservatives as the "traitors".

Even at this late date, there is no need for revolution. Just for some leaders to grow spines.

So, one fine day the President wakes up with a spine, and the next thing we know our Constitutional Republic is quickly restored, sans left-wingers and other traitors, and we quickly defeat all of our foreign enemies. All is well in the world.

Sounds good to me. Unfortunately, you have to wake up at the end of a story like that, because you're dreaming. The road down which this country has gone and is going will not be so easy to exit, if it is possible at all. I have to hope that it is possible to restore our Republic, but the Romans had no such luck. Maybe we can learn from history, but the great mass of people has been so dumbed-down in our public indoctrination centers - uh, excuse me, schools - that they don't know that there is history before 1933, let alone what that history offers in terms of lessons for our times.

Am I pessimistic - you bet. Do I still hope, and work for, the optimistic side of things - certainly.

Nice analysis. Unfortunately, I must admit that I do tend to agree with you.
