It's definitely #1 for news. My husband is still amazed that I knew we were bombing Afghanistan before it ever hit the news. Free Republic is tops for getting the news quick and, of course, minus the spin!

Being able to put my 2 cents in on the issues doesn't suck either.

It is a one stop shop for continuing news coverage from 'reporters' all over the place. Stories found here often may never make national news, or are hidden by the liberal media. It gives people a place to sound off and voice their thoughts on the issues. I like it for a lot of reasons. It is a network of grass roots type people swelling up to battle the evil liberal preaching...err teaching institutions they call UNIversities, and so on :) Amen.

I like the fact that I can get both the news and information here, plus insight from other people and facts and such. The only downside, is that at times, free republic gets a little to down or pessimistic. It would be nice to see positive news and positive feedback over anything good that is happening with conservatives, heck over at demo whatever underground, they always whine and cry and that makes me feel just a weee bit better.

Durning Impeachment and the 2000 election this was "The Place To Be".
I was way ahead of all my friends and relatives with the news.
Thank God for FR.

I love this site because I get the news here first, plus, we get alot more news that non-readers of FR don't/won't get.
FR is helping to change the world, one post at a time. Most FReepers are intelligent, funny and articulate and it's pretty neat when you hear Rush or somebody repeat some of the same ideas about the news that you see right here on FR.
Thank the Good Lord for FreeRepublic or I might still be a democrat. [ugh!]

I was at a computer conference when the WTC attacks happened. Everyone rushed to the complimentary computers in the lobby - nobody could log on to any of the news sites except me! I brought up FreeRepublic. Other folks noticed I was on FR and pretty soon, all the other users were logged on to FR.

A crowd gathered behind me and we (sadly) watched the story unfold. I know some new FReepers were created that day.

Definetly the best news/conservative website.

During the election I found out from Freerepublic way before the news media reported it that Florida really was not Gore's and was going to Bush. It was a powerful moment where everything I was conditioned to believe turned out to be a manipulated lie. The internet has made folks like Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings obsolete. Long live Freerepublic.

That we get the news first is a given, no one is better for that. The second thing is being able to discuss the news and politics with mostly like minded people. In the other world out there, liberals are running amuck and conservatives can't get a word in edge wise. Here, we are the dominant force and that is mavelous dahling!

Free Republic has completely changed my life. It is a tremendous resource for not only breaking news with real time commentary but also for in depth news and fascinating discussions on virtually every topic of interest. I have learned more in my five years on Free Republic than perhaps all the years in my life up to that point and that is no exaggeration.

Used to be that I would watch the 11:00 news every night to get the latest news, sports and weather. I haven't sat down and watched a news broadcast on television in years. With Free Republic I am up to speed in minutes and then I can easily spend hours going in depth on the current events that interest me. (If I want sports or weather, I can zip right over to ESPN or AccuWeather.com. but Free Republic usually covers sports and weather too!)

September 11 was a perfect example of what I am talking about. During that first hour, people in my office were stumbling around with all sorts of misinformation. One person was saying that the Senate Building got taken out and another was saying that there were at least a dozen more hijacked planes out there. I logged onto Free Republic and within minutes, the entire office congregated around me because I had all the latest information.

Same for the election nightmare of 2000. It was Free Republic that kept me sane during that uncertain month and I am convinced that Free Republic not only helped keep Algore from stealing the election but they generated enough votes for Bush to win him Florida in the first place (thanks in large part to bringing a lot of attention to the Elian controversy earlier that year).

One positive of FR is the simple collection of news stories gathered by dedicated FReepers. One would have to browse literally 100+ websites to get the same information.

Perhaps the biggest assest of Free Republic is the members who post from little-known sources. Local stories in someone's town newspaper could have far-reaching consequences, and many FReepers may never have known about it if it hadn't been for FR.
