RABAT (Reuters) - Morocco has arrested 30 radical Islamists for the alleged killing of more than half a dozen Moroccans, a justice ministry official says.

The 30 men, arrested mainly in Casablanca, Fez and Tangiers, were all members of the hardline radical Salafiya Jihadia and Takfir Wal Hidjra groups, said the official on Wednesday, who declined to be named.

The accused, who include the Salafiya's spiritual leader known only by his alias Damir (Conscience) and its operations chief Youssef Fikri, were charged with killings, theft and grievous bodily harm, he added.

Some of the accused had been in Afghanistan and were linked to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network, which is blamed for the September 11 attacks on the United States, the official said.

He gave no details on the date of the arrests and the exact number of people killed by the two groups but said a detailed official statement would be issued later on Wednesday.

I looked it up and according to the American Jewish Year Book in 2000 there lived 5.800 Jews in Morocco. It seems most left Morocco to live in Israel.

There used to be a lot more, in 1948 there were 265,000, but they moved to Israel.

The previous King of Morocco was a good friend of Malcolm Forbes and owned a huge piece of property in New Jersey. He farmed there.

What happened to the land and the country after the King died, I don't know.
