GAZA, Aug 7, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Israeli troops killed on Wednesday the son of a prominent Islamic Hamas leader in Khan Younis area in the southern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical sources and eyewitnesses reported.

The witnesses said Israeli snipers stationed at the Jewish settlement of Gani Tal fired at Husam Ahmed Nemer Hamdan, 27, from a distance of 600 meters as he stooped on the roof of their house.

They said Hamdan was shot with a bullet in the head and he was immediately taken to the local Nasser Hospital, where he died shortly.

Sheikh Ahmed Nemer Hamdan is a prominent leader of the Hamas movement in the southern Gaza Strip, especially in the town and refugee camp of Khan Younis.

Hamas militants vowed to avenge the assassination of their colleague Hamdan, saying his death won't pass easily.

Earlier Wednesday, Israeli tanks firing heavy machineguns raided the northern Gaza Strip village of Beit Lahya, where they shot dead a Palestinian policeman.

Undercover Israeli Border Police backed by helicopters killed a senior Fatah militant in the West Bank town of Tulkarm.

The slain militant was identified as Ziad Daas, a regional commander in the radical Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade. He had been wanted by Israel for alleged involvement in the execution-style killing of two Israeli restaurant owners in the West Bank town of Tulkarm in December 2000.

Israeli sources confirmed the killing of a fourth Palestinian Wednesday, describing him as another militant. But Palestinian sources said the victim is a civilian.

Unconfirmed reports said Israeli troops killed two other wanted men in the day in Tulkarem.

"from a distance of 600 meters as he stooped on the roof of their house."

While I don’t want to belittle the obviously nice work of an Israeli sniper, I’m getting a little tired of this pin prick approach to retribution.

Surely Israel realizes that even if they were to go door to door handing out food and blankets, the palis would shoot them in the back as they left and the international community would be outraged that the food was too salty and the blankets weren’t warm enough.

The only thing the palis can understand is peace on their own terms- land for peace.

Each time they violate the peace, land must be taken from them. For example, last week’s bombing at Hebrew University; The proper response would be 24 hours to evacuate Nablus, and then a seemingly endless barrage of Daisy Cutters, non-stop circling of AC-130 gun ships braiding every square inch with round after round of bullets, followed by sweeping waves of Heavy Armor pulverizing the remaining rubble into dust, and only then, a massive storm of heavily armed troops to search for and execute anyone unlucky enough to have some how survived.

It’s blind optimism to think that this would dissuade the palis, but sooner or later, they’d be herded into a small enough space that this now well honed technique could be applied WITHOUT the aforementioned warning. The collateral explosions from their bomb making factories would make for good T.V. watching.

Wow! That is between a quarter and a half mile! And the sniper hits the bulls-eye!

That's some good shooting.

I like it. Maybe they'll all get a vitamin 'D' deficiency from having to hide inside all the time.

The psychological impact of sticking your head out of a hole has got to be devestating to these guys. (Hide in a hole all the time?)

This is such a simple solution it's almost scary. And it has an excellent chance to be very effective.

One thing that has always intrigued me is how they are able to identify these top terrorists. Can anyone help me here?
