As the Torch Burns

August 7, 2002
No.4

What do New Jersey voters think?

· “You have just told two versions of the same story. Were you lying then? Or are you lying now?

“On April 18, 2001, a very agitated and contentious Torricelli adamantly and vigorously denied that he ever took gifts from David Chang… Pounding on the lectern… he seemed like a little boy hurt by such charges.

“Fast forward to the present and the conciliatory remarks after his admonishment in the Senate, where he acknowledged the receipt of gifts…

“He should do the honorable thing and resign.”

-- Phillip Topps, Vernon, NJ, letter to the editor, Star Ledger, August 6, 2002

· “The Senate Select Committee on Ethics held its hearings behind closed doors, without the public or press. I wonder what Torricelli would say if the officers of Enron, WorldCom, or Arthur Andersen were questioned behind closed doors by other corporate officers without the public or press…

“What makes Torricelli special? If he has nothing to hide, why couldn’t hearings have been held in public? I guess we have a double standard, one for senators and one for everyone else.”

-- Thomas J. Lienhard, Westfield, NJ, letter to the editor, Star Ledger, August 6, 2002

· “I have been saddened to watch one of New Jersey’s own political leaders be so combative, so unaccountable and so out of touch with his constituents…

“… I find it amazing that Sen. Robert Torricelli continues to refuse to fully disclose all records pertinent to his relationship with David Chang and explain to the people he represents what really happened. This information would allow New Jersey residents to understand all aspects of the case and formulate our own opinions.”

-- Asher Ailey, Plainsboro, NJ, letter to the editor, Trenton Times, August 6, 2002

The Courier Post out of Camden County took the step of actually endorsing Forrester on Sunday. I'm quite sure though that two weeks before the election they will reverse themselves for some wishy washy reason.

Quite a few. The last three have shown a statistical dead heat, with Forrester leading in the most recent (late July GOP poll) 40-37%. They were tied in a media poll at 43% just prior to that.

The Courier Post did not endorse any candidate in 1996. In 2002 they felt so strongly about the race they endorsed earlier in any paper in the history of the state.

Also The Record (Bergen), Torricelli's hometown paper, the one that knows him best, called on him to resign.

In addition to the National Research poll showing Forrester ahead 40-37, there is the WABC Eyewitness poll showing 59% of New Jersey voters feel Torricelli is "Fundamentally dishonest."

And then there was the WKYW poll in Philadelphia over the weekend that asked after watching the Torricelli "Checkers" apology ad, do you have a better, worse or the same opinion of Torricelli? 49% of New Jersey voters felt WORSE ABOUT TORRICELLI AFTER WATCHING THE AD!

37-37 Now I know that Q is a lib poll, but the last one I saw was 43-43.

I'll bet In a poll of 1000 "likely" voters, taken over weekdays, it is probably 51-37.

The last Quinnipiac poll showed Torch up 44-36%. So this shows a significant drop for Torricelli, though Forrester has not yet benefitted.
