Lately, even as I hear the war drums incessantly beating with regard to Iraq, I've heard numerous radio ads reminding all "young men" that registration for "selective service" is "the law".
Could it possibly be that a ressurection of the draft is being contemplated? And if so will this draft be "selective" in the sense that it won't "select" the children of our national leaders(?) (as apparently was the case with Vietnam?)
My own three boys are a few years from being eligable for such a draft, and I've shared with them my belief that the integrity of our leadership (Democrat and Republican alike) is highly suspect. I've also shared with them that the eight years prior to the current administration was proof that one can dodge the draft and even get elected President.
I would like to know what other Freepers think of the prospect of resurrecting the draft?
And I'm not too worried about my kids ... all three have earned their black belts in Shotokan karate and spend their Tuesday nights "on the mats" with ex-Green Berets, local police, etc. They're all trained in handling firearms, and can identify any gun simply by listening to the report. They're favorite pasttime is paintball.
No, I would probably be more worried about Saddam if they were turned loose (just kidding).
And, while they will listen to me, I am gratified that they do tend to formulate their own opinions.
I was reaised that way; to respect authority because it was authority. I ended up in Viet Nam, and lost most of the opportunities my contemporaries had.
Bill Clinton was raised differently and ended up President.
My child is raised to respect authority only if the authority deserves respect, and just being in power does not mean they deserve respect. That includes Presidents, politicians, preachers, myself, etc.
Yes, fortunately enough parents prefer to install their kids with pride and patriotism instead of cynicism that there are still enough volunteers to fill the ranks.
The leaders of our country have earned our cynicism, time and time again.
Generally so do I, but that evades my question rather than answering it. What if the parents are evil? There are plenty out there.
As opposed to our public school system which definately is (premarital sex, homosexuality, etc are all ok kids! The bible is completely wrong, evolution is right) or our politicians who are quite often more crooked than those behinds bars and go back on their word all the time. Again, I'll take my chances, if we catch abusive parents, then by all means, we should step in, otherwise, live and let live. We've had a nanny-state government for too long.
Teaching your children to be cynical is not a good thing, IMO.
There's plenty of time for them to learn that on their own.
They'll come back from college hating YOU.
Yes, but not trusting government is as American as apple pie. Isn't that what the founding fathers had in mind?
If not, why then the system of checks and balances?
Additionally, the only major war on the boards is with Iraq and Bush is not likely to reinstate the draft to topple Saddam. He and all politicians know reinstating the draft would dramatically cut support for the war. Plus there is not time to start the draft up again, train recruits, and have them ready for action in six months for action in Iraq.
If everyone in this country experienced the hardships and sacrifices made by the people who serve in the military to defend our country, then there would be a lot fewer sheeples in this country, and a lot fewer people voting for and electing commies like Klinton and Dash-hole.
AMEN!!!!
IMO, no.
The question begged to be evaded, because it was far too broad and "compared apples to oranges." There are plenty of evil parents out there, but which of the many different definitions of evil should be used. An answer to that would take an eternity. Assuming you can define evil, there are definitely plenty more evil parents than politicians, if you are looking at an absolute number. However, if plenty is looked at as a percentage of evil parents to total parents as compared to the percentage of evil politicians to total politicians, then there are not plenty of evil parents. I suspect that the evil politicial percentage is so great as to justify "The Dukes" position.
