Rape As Punishment
Washington Post ^ | Sunday, July 28, 2002 | Mona Eltahawy

A Pakistan tribal council's horrific "punishment" by gang rape of a young woman last month was just the tip of a very ugly iceberg called honor.

In the name of that most elusive of concepts, women are shot, beheaded, burned, stoned and beaten. And, in the case of Saleema, raped.

Four men raped Saleema (not her real name) for more than an hour to ruin her honor and avenge that of another woman. (Saleema's 12-year-old brother had been in the company of a woman from a more powerful tribal family, apparently not by his own choice, and been summarily accused of having an affair with her). Hence the tribal council's "verdict" on his sister.

Thank god these folks are our allies! By the way didn't we liberate the next door neighbors, the women of Afghanistan?

It is a cultural thing. All cultures are relative, none better, none worse. Celebrate the diversity and stop the bitching. People can't be judgemental. No, that would involve making moral choices. People can't be intolerant. No, that would involve standards. Celebrate the diversity. All morality is subjective, our strength is in our diversity. We have no business telling other cultures how to live, celebrate the diversity. Even in this third world nuclear power cesspool.

Besides raping the boy's sister, they raped the boy.

For all it's claims of maximizing the opportunity for heterosexual behavior, Islam sure seems weak when it comes to the question of using homosexual rape as an instrument of government policy.

The Iranians have the same problem - the mullahs who make such a show of being "real men" are very quick to turn to the use of homosexual rape as an additional punishment on prisoners.

Kind of makes you wonder what those ol'boys are really growing their beards for, eh?!

You are so right. We don't have enough rape as punishment in the US. That inequity must stop. Pass laws to mandate "rape as punisment" at once. We must accomodate our diversity ;-)

The dishonor was certainly not Saleema's.

The USA sponsors and abides more "rape as punishment" than Pakistan could ever dream of. It's a constant feature of all US prisons, both male and female. If rape and sodomy don't constitute "cruel and unusual punishment" nothing does, in my book. But it's still the norm. Now granted, many of the people getting this did seriously bad things like steal and kill. It's hard to feel sorry for them. OTOH there are no doubt lots of people in for minor drug possession, violating obscure gun laws, traffic offenses and shoplifting who end up raped and HIV +.

I don't condone rape as a punishment, ever, and would like my government to work harder to eradicate it's use in prison.
