HELP! I'm getting blank pages in FR
Self | 28 July 2002 | Max Monroe

Posted on 07/28/2002 5:36:05 AM PDT by Max Monroe

It started on another page I like to visit. One by one, links I would go to would come up blank with just the heading of the page. I spoke with my ISP who asked what browser I used. I told her Netscape. She said that was most likely the problem and to try IE, which I did. I was able to visit those pages with no problem yesterday. This morning I used IE to get to FR. When I wanted to get to THREADS, all I got was a page full of gibberish.

I rebooted several times and today when I tried to get to FR Threads on Netscape the page was blank as usual. Can any of you computer geniuses tell me what's going wrong here or what I can do? I've cleaned my cache and history as suggested by the web site manager on the other site. Other than that, I'm at a loss to fix the problem. Please, please, please, help a little old gray haired lady.

Well, this probably won't help you, but I had the same problem at about 5 AM this morning. Using IE 5.5 I kept getting blanks, or that blasted "SHODOL" page, and couldn't get anywhere on the rest of the net. Email still seemed to work.

I tried the usual cleanout of caches & cookies, checked & found 24 broken links, used the "repair" option in the IE uninstall function... finally tried a cold reboot, and the problem cleared.

I'm pretty sure it's the new "conservatives are stupid and suck" virus. Funding to write the new virus was provided by Bill Clinton in his latest attempt to build his legacy.

FR seems to be thwarting his efforts.

CNN loads faster now that you've been infected.

A little old gray haired lady called "Max Munroe"?

Well sometimes when the net is busy pages will kind of sit there loading but not get anywhere. Try hitting the stop button and then refreshing the page.

Good Luck, Maxine!

Yes, indeed. Rebooting seemed to be what cleared my machine- but it's hard to tell; I run old software and weird iron.

Do you have (or ever have) GetRight download utility? If so, this might be the problem. Check here for help:

Yes, I am a little old gray haired lady and my name is NOT Maxine. Whatever. But you guys haven't solved my problem. This has been going on for weeks now. It only started with FR this past Friday when the THREAD page wouldn't load. On the other site I mentioned, the links are coming up blank one by one - links that I visited every day on a regular basis. I can reboot till I'm blue in the face and that doesn't solve the problem. I regularly defrag and thorough scan - so what's left? I've been a Freeper since 1996 when it first started and when I started on the internet. And I've never had problems with this site before. So somebody, come to my rescue before I have a hissy fit, please!

I apologise! I should have included a :>) to the remark!

You have to admit that your choice of names is humorous, "Max Munroe". (Listen to me . . . "Bowana" LOL)

My only other thought is a virus. Do you have virus protection installed on your computer?

Do you clear your Temporary Internet Files? Look in your Windows file folder for the folder with that name.

To delete temporary internet files - From the Edit menu, choose Preferences. From the left TreeView window, double-click the Advanced Category then select the Cache category. Click on the Clear Memory Cache button as well as the Clear Disk Cache button.

Delete your FreeRepublic cookies, if that doesn't work. Then log in again. *not a joke*.

This is a post-and-run. Will be back later this evening.

I don't know if it will help, but do you use the Disk Cleanup utility before you system scan and before you defrag? And do you do all these in safe mode? Those might help. Also, do you have any anti-pop-up programs working?

Answers to multiple questions. Yes I have virus protection. I have no anti pop-up programs. I thorough scan and defrag on a regularly scheduled basis.

I have deleted my history, cache and temporary internet files. NOTHING seems to change my situation. I can get messages but not threads on FR. I still cannot get to links on that other page I mentioned. They come up completely white even though they go through the loading process.

Just curious, next time a page loads completely blank, take a look at the "View/Source" menu in IE, and see how much HTML coding the blank page actually contains.

Which version of Windows and IE are you running, by the way?

Using an older version of Netscape, I occasionally have had the same problem lately. Sometimes it takes care of itself automatically by backing up, refreshing, etc. If it doesn't, I go to a different link and come back. Sometimes that works. Seldom do I have to reboot.

I never used to have this particular problem, but I have had lots of others with Netscape. Still I'd rather fight than switch.

Are you logged in?

Seriously, I might give the box a scandisk and a defrag and see if that helps.

It should be done periodically regardless and it can't hurt.

Windows 98 and the latest version of IE - but IE isn't the problem - I use Netscape 4.7 and have done so it seems like forever.

I too have been frustrated by Netscape 4.7. I hated the newer 6.1?

Sorry if my earlier post came off as making fun of you or anything. Re: consevative virus.

I've been using Opera browser instead of Netscape. It's not bad. You can get it here http://www.opera.com/download/

Good luck!
