I'll go there in a sec. In the meantime, here's a news article from Channel 5 News in St. Louis...
http://www.ksdk.com/news/news_article_lc.asp?storyid=28266
VALLEY PARK (KSDK) -- St. Louis County police are searching a neighborhood in Valley Park for a missing six-year-old girl. Investigators say the girl walked away from a home in the 800 block of Benton before eight o'clock this morning.
Police say Casey Williamson was last seen in her nightclothes. They also say a man, who had been staying with friends down the street from the Williamson home, is missing.
Police have units on the ground and in the air and are combing the area near the family home.
We have a crew on the way to the scene.
Well have more information as it becomes available.

Is this really a tragedy? Maybe. Is this a newsworthy trend? Before we all go off into an emotional tizzy, I'd like to remind Freepers of a couple of things: Black church burnings and last year's prize for making the news more fantastic than it really was - shark attacks. (I'd also like to point out that the local Fox affiliate, Fox2, sensationalizes all of their local "Breaking News" coverage. I know, I still watch them despite their drift into yellow journalism). So, let's hope they find the little girl, safe and sound and let's also wait until the facts are in before we decide whether there is an actual epidemic - of child abductions or of sloppy, tabloid-style reporting.
On the scene, live from St. Louis...

How do they know she "walked away from her home?" Someone saw her?

Tin Foil Hat ON.
I believe that this rash of hot and heavy coverage of missing childrens' cases is no accident.
I haven't commented thus far, but I have to predict that all of this coverage is to fuel the fire of any parent's worst fear and to accelerate the microchipping program that is already in the works.
I fully expect the Digital Angel chip to be heavily advertised and pushed by the media as the "best way to protect your child" since it can locate them just minutes after abductions take place, thus sparing any possibility of their molestation and/or death.
Tin foil hat OFF.
That said, I hope she is found safe and quickly!!

BTW, this is what I think really happened to Danielle Van Dam. She walked out of that house, and someone got her. NOT DW.

We don't know if it's a tragedy, but we do know that the first few hours are critical and that if anyone in the area see's anything, it could make a difference.

A surprising statistic
here.
To: foolish-one
From what I can gather there are about
100 stranger abductions of children per year at this time. A few years ago it was about 300 per year.
So basically if the media continues in this pattern we should hear about a new child abduction frenzy every 3 days or so.
Which in some ways can become a deterent to other would be freaks. Especially if Avila gets the death penalty.

What I'm trying to figure out is if, all of a sudden, kids are being snatched. I would think, from all the missing kids reports that this stuff happens every day. Is it that the national media has just started to cover it since the van dam case?
