What I'm trying to figure out is if, all of a sudden, kids are being snatched. I would think, from all the missing kids reports that this stuff happens every day. Is it that the national media has just started to cover it since the van dam case?

It does happen often, although not usually by strangers.
However, nothing the media does is by accident. The Van Dam case was not the first high-profile kidnapping that the media swarmed over.
All kidnapping cases should be covered in an effort to find the child quickly, but it has become the latest news de jour and that means there is an agenda in the works.

Most child abductions have been from a relative or a custody battle between divorced parents. Snatching kids by strangers is rare but apparently becoming more common with the media frenzy.
